A Tennesse fire chief seriously injured in an apparatus crash last December has died.
Milledgeville Chief Leland Alexander 78, died April 27, the U.S. Fire Administration reported.
During a thunderstorm on Dec. 1, Alexander was driving an engine tanker to refill it when the tires dropped off the right shoulder. When he tried to correct it, the rig ran off the road and crashed.
Alexander received immediate treatment and was transported to a hospital where he underwent numerous surgeries. He was released after an extended stay.
However, he suffered from an infection and internal bleeding and was re-admitted.
His death brings to 24 the number of firefighters killed on duty this year.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
