Photo Story: Flames Rip Through Two N.Y. Buildings

Nov. 28, 2012

Firefighters were able to contain a fire in a downtown business district before it spread to two adjacent buildings on Nov. 25.

At 5:22 p.m. Columbia County 911 dispatched the Kinderhook and Valatie Fire Departments for a  a reported structure fire at 4-6 Broad St. in the Village of Kinderhook.

Fire was through the roof of the two structures when firefighters arrived. Kinderhook Chief Pete Hunter called for additional mutual aid from Chatham, Ghent and Niverville.

Kinderhook Engines 35-1 and 35-2 worked with Valatie Ladder 55 and Engine 55-2 on the initial attack.

Supply lines were laid to Valatie Ladder 55 and Chatham Ladder 58-5 as they placed their ladder pipes into services to contain the heavy fire.

The hard work of about 50 firefighters using two ladder pipes, one deck gun and multiple handlines stopped the fire from extending to the Old Dutch Inn and the Anderson Agency building, which flanked the two buildings that burned.
