A driver whose car collided with a fire apparatus on a San Diego highway admitted he was responding to a friend's text message before the accident happened.

A driver who hit a fire apparatus from behind on a San Diego highway early Thursday admitted to texting while driving when the crash happened.

No one was injured in the accident, which occurred at about 1:30 a.m. along State Route 52 in the Tierrasanta area of San Diego, KGTV-TV reports. The car caught fire following the crash, but crews were able to quickly extinguish it.

“I saw them a good four car lengths ahead of me," the driver told the TV station. "I thought I had plenty of time to respond to a text. … Before I even got the chance to look up, I hit a fire truck right in front of me."

Along with the fire, the crash also caused the car's air bags to deploy, and it crumpled the vehicle's hood. The fire apparatus only sustained a large dent to the rear bumper.

It's unclear if the driver was cited for accident, KGTV added.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the apparatus that was hit belonged to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. The department in the accident was not identified.
