Beacon Falls, CT, Utility Truck Hit on Highway; Firefighters OK

April 4, 2024
If the blocking unit hadn't been positioned where it was, it would have been a game changer, Beacon Falls Fire Chief Brian DeGeorge said.

It was a close call for more than a dozen emergency crews in Beacon Falls when a fire utility truck being used to block the road was rear-ended.

Beacon Falls Fire Chief Brian DeGeorge said the crash happened quickly with the blocking rig absorbing the impact of the high-speed crash. No firefighters or EMS personnel were injured.

“The one truck that was in front of it...There were two guys actually taking equipment off of it. So, if this truck wasn’t there, it would have definitely been a game changer,” DeGeorge told WTNH.

The driver of the car had to be extricated after slamming into the fire vehicle which sustained at least $20,000 damage.

Connecticut State Police charged the driver with failing to drive a reasonable distance apart resulting in an accident and operating an unregistered motor vehicle.

Trooper First Class Pedro Muniz says the incident serves as a crucial reminder for motorists to slow down.

“First responders put themselves at risk all the time while responding to calls. We never know what the other drivers are going to do. It’s very important when you’re coming up on a scene with emergency vehicles, whether that be a tow truck, DOT on the side of the road, we ask that you slow down,” he said.
