Recent fires from around the country.

Bronx, NY, March 23, 2017—FDNY crews responded to an all-hands fire at 883 E 165th Street. Firefighters encountered a lot of clutter in the fourth-floor apartment, slowing efforts to knock down the fire. Interestingly, the fire was only a few blocks from Engine 82/Ladder 31, Firehouse Magazine founder Dennis Smith’s former firehouse, which was featured on the cover of the 40th anniversary issue in October 2016.

Rockland, MA, March 22, 2017—The Rockland Fire Department responded to a fully involved fire in a two-story vacant factory that ultimately reached seven alarms. As embers fell on neighboring residences, crews worked to contain the fire to the building of origin and protect exposures. A Tier 1 Hazardous Materials Response was also requested due to the air quality issues in the area.

Union City, NJ, March 4, 2017—North Hudson Regional firefighters responded to a heavily involved fire in an occupied three-story, wood-frame mixed occupancy building. The 30-mph winds blew embers across the neighborhood, ultimately resulting in ignition of the steeple of St. Joseph and Michael Church, one block away from the fire scene. Squad 7, on ember patrol, called in the church fire and went to work with their boom, wetting down buildings on the opposite side of the street as well as the church. Local mutual aid was strained, so the FDNY came across the Hudson River with a task force of two engines, a tower ladder and battalion chief to help extinguish both fires.

Corydon Township, PA, March 8, 2017—The Corydon Township Volunteer Fire Department and the Bradford Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fully involved residential structure fire. Multiple attack lines were positioned to battle the flames. Fire operations were hampered by strong winds, and the structure began collapsing shortly after firefighters’ arrival. Crews were on scene for 4 hours.
