• A basement or cellar fire can be one of the more challenging types of fires that firefighters can faced. Success can be achieved by using sound strategy and tactics.
    Basement and Cellar Fires
  •
Photo 1. Upon arrival at the Lansing Avenue fire, Cleveland, OH, firefighters saw only very light smoke showing, but recognized the odor of a structural fire. Note there is no smoke discoloring around these windows, even after the fire. The upstairs suite was gutted from a heavy fire condition. There was a reported person trapped, but a search was negative.

  •
Sergeant David Stacy: “We heard a ‘crack’ and the floor gave way in what felt like a two-stage motion. First, the floor dropped an inch or two, followed a half-second later by a drop of about eight to 12 inches. It felt as if the floor had failed in the corner where we initially attacked the visible fire and the rest of the floor subsequently leaned toward that end.”
