  • Upcoming Fire Safety Related Deadlines

By Dayna Hilton - Saturday January 15, 2011
Hello everyone!   Hope that you are having a good 2011 so far! Wanted to share a couple of deadlines that are coming up in February, but before I do, wanted to mention that Siren, my 5 month old Dalmatian, is growing up so fast! Siren and I have been busy "Skyping" with students all over the world! Someday I will share more information on skyping and how you can reach more children in your community with your fire safety message. In the photo collage, Siren and I were skyping with a school in Canada. We had a blast and even had the help of a Canadian firefighter during the program. Great times!   Okay, back to the deadlines. The first deadline is for the Fire Prevention and Safety grant. Deadline for grant applications...

You can take advantage of the early bird special if you sign up before December 31, 2010. This is a hands-on camp where participants can expect to work and share ideas and networking at this conference is key. You can bring your programs to share and have qualified professionals critique them. You can pack you puppets, props and costumes and makeup and be sure to bring your camera. If you have never attended the characterization camp before, it will be an entirely new experience, according to the camp organizers. I had the opportunity to attend the...

  • An Effective Twist for Sharing the Fire Safety Message

By Dayna Hilton - Monday August 9, 2010
Have you ever stopped to wonder how attached people can become to their pets? Perhaps you are one of these people, considering your pet like a member of the family.   As an educator, you can use this to your advantage. As many of us know, people, at times, can be complacent, thinking, “Oh, a fire will never happen to me, it is something that happens to other people.”   You may share fire safety with some folks and they may be one of those complacent people that I just described. Have you ever considered trying this approach~ sharing with them that perhaps they want to help keep their pets safe?   When doing your presentation where you typically say something like, “You want to practice fire safety to help keep you...
  • An Idea for Your Next Fire Safety Presentation

By Dayna Hilton - Sunday August 8, 2010
As I stood in line at the pharmacy the other day, I stuck up a conversation with the woman behind me.   Seeing the fire department logo on my shirt, she proceeded to tell me that her home recently caught fire. As she shared her story, it sent shivers up my spine when she told me that she went back into her house to get her jewelry.   How many times do we hear stories like this? If you’re like me, it is way too many times.   At a recent conference, I watched a video that still has me thinking of it, even to this day. The basic premise of the video was the point that it made~ people have only about three minutes to get out if there is a fire in their home (and in some cases, even less time), and the video stressed...
  • Food for Thought

By Dayna Hilton - Saturday August 7, 2010
I recently heard a disturbing story from a colleague of mine. The two of us were sharing information with each other on smoke alarm installation programs.   Both of us share the fundamental belief that the best practice to help keep homeowners safe would be for fire departments to install smoke alarms, not simply hand them to a homeowner. I was surprised to learn from her that in some cases, homeowners that were simply given the smoke alarms (without the installation component) took the smoke alarms to pawn shops, were they could get up to $2 for each alarm. That one was a new one to me and I was saddened to hear that such a thing actually happened.   She shared another story (one similar to other stories that I have heard...
  • Congratulations to Jeanene Green and Gerri Penney!

By Dayna Hilton - Friday August 6, 2010
Morning, everyone! There's nothing like hearing good news and I would like to offer my congratulations to Jeanene Green and my fire safety educator friend, Gerri Penney from Florida. The Florida Association of Fire and Life Safety Educators (FAFLSE) is one that I have admired over the years. I watch in awe in how a state is able to have such a wonderful organization for its fire and life safety educators. The Lifetime Achievement Award is given when an educator has done a outstanding job over time, participated in the FFMIA/FAFLSE in an influential manner and especially contributed in such a way as the FAFLSE Board deems "exceptional". Palm Beach County Fire Rescue's Gerri Penney has dedicated her life to the safety of...
