For the 34th year, the career fire service takes to the pages of Firehouse Magazine to share and compare statistics about company and department levels, funding, staffing and pay. A total of 249 fire departments took part in this year’s survey, representing 43 states, the District of Columbia and four Canadian provinces. The departments represented in this latest survey protect 81,262,008, and they have budgets totaling more than $14.2 billion. They provide the services with 3,920 engine companies, 1,425 ladder companies, 1,676 ambulances and numerous specialized units. They responded to 1,109,842 fire calls, 7,217,142 EMS calls and 10,214,754 total calls last year.
