Sept. 21, 2018
The application process for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program begins Sept. 24, and an application walkthrough will be provided online.

The application process for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is set to kick off next week.

FEMA has made a host of resources available to assist fire service leaders and their departments on the application process beginning Monday, Sept. 24, including:

  • Cost Share Calculator
  • Narrative Get Ready Guide - Application
  • Narrative Get Ready Guide - Narrative
  • Self Evaluation Vehicle Acquisition
  • Self Evaluation Operations Safety
  • Application Checklist

There are also webinars you can access here that will help walk you through the process and alert you to any changes in the application from last year. Two sessions will be held each day from Sept. 24-27 at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Eastern, and one session will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m. Eastern.

The webinars will also teach attendees about the AFG program and its mission, which organizations and activities are eligible, and how to apply. AFG staff will be available to explain and answer any specific questions.

FEMA says the goal of the AFG program is to "enhance the safety of the public and firefighters with respect to fire-related hazards by providing direct financial assistance to eligible fire departments, nonaffiliated Emergency Medical Services organizations, and State Fire Training Academies."

"This funding is for critically needed resources to equip and train emergency personnel to recognized standards, enhance operations efficiencies, foster interoperability, and support community resilience."
