"I am really excited to have the opportunity," said Lisa Jennings, who was hired by Batesville Fire & Rescue, a department that was established in 1887.

After 132 years, an Indiana fire Department will have its first full-time female firefighter.

Lisa Jennings was hired by Batesville Fire & Rescue, and she was sworn in by the mayor this week, the department said in a statement. Since the department was founded in 1887, women have work as volunteer firefighters and part-time emergency medical technicians, but Jennings is the first woman to serve full time.

“I am really excited to have the opportunity to utilize the education I obtained in fire school in addition to my paramedic background,” she said in a statement.

Jennings is a member of the University of Cincinnati Health Air Care and Mobile Care Special Events Team, and she had been a Ripley County EMT and paramedic. After graduating from UC in 2017, Jennings received her Indiana firefighter certification in 2018, according to the department.
