Revamping the pay scale for the Tinley Park Fire Department is a way to keep the village competitive when it comes to hiring and keeping firefighters.

An Illinois village is restructuring how its firefighters are paid in order to remain competitive when it comes to hiring and retention.

The new 10-step pay plan for the Tinley Park Fire Department would offer 2 percent increases at each level for its mostly part-time workforce, the Daily Southtown reports. If it's approved by the Village Board next month, the plan would start May 1, the beginning of the fiscal year.

Under the plan, the starting hourly rate for firefighters after a year's probation would be $19.52, up from $19.04, according to the Southtown. Initial hourly increases also would be included for assistant and deputy chiefs, going to $28.16 and $38.37, respectively.
