MA Firefighter Becomes City's First Female Fire Captain

A 12-year-member of the Easthampton Fire Department and an instructor at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy, Sandra Kraus was promoted this week.

EASTHAMPTON -- City officials have promoted a firefighter who is now the first female fire captain in the department.

Sandra Kraus, a 12-year-member of the Fire Department was promoted by Fire Chief David Mottor and Mayor Nicole LaChappelle to a vacant captain position.

The two announced the promotion on Tuesday. A swearing-in ceremony will be scheduled for a later date, Mottor said.

Kraus is also a paramedic, an instructor for the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy and a member of the Western Massachusetts Technical Rescue Team, he said.

She was recently recognized by Gov. Charlie Baker for her involvement with the Technical Rescue Team for a difficult recovery operation in Berkshire County, he said.
