NY Firefighter Harassed over Weight Files Lawsuit

Sept. 23, 2019
According to the lawsuit, the Hauppauge firefighter, who weighs nearly 350 pounds, claims his colleagues taunted him about his size and tampered with his safety gear.

A New York firefighter taunted by colleagues about his weight is suing the department for discrimination.

The lawsuit by Hauppauge volunteer firefighter John Munro, who weighs 347 pounds, contends that his size was the source of jokes and derogatory comments since joining the department in 2017, the New York Post reports. He was called a "cow" and teased for taking up two seats while riding in fire apparatus.

Munro reported the harassment to his supervisors, but he claims they ignored the problem. On one occasion, according to the lawsuit, Munro's rope and harness gear had been tampered with after he requested the department conduct an investigation into the taunting, the Post reports.

Officials with the Hauppauge Fire Department did not comment to the Post about Munro's lawsuit, which is seeking an unspecified amount in damages.
