Flint Fire Department quartermaster Rico Phillips, the founder of a youth hockey league, is up for the NHL's Willie O'Ree Community Hero Award.

Flint Fire Department quartermaster Rico Phillips, the founder of a youth hockey league, is up for the NHL's Willie O'Ree Community Hero Award.

The award is named for pioneer NHL player Willie O'Ree, who took the ice for the Boston Bruins on Jan. 18, 1958 to become the league's first black player.
