Minimum qualifications include being a high school graduate or equivalent. Applicants must be 18 years old and be either a U.S. citizen or resident alien. Applicants possessing the minimum qualifications will be scheduled for the written examination. Those with a passing score on the written examination will be placed on the eligible list with a rating of "Qualified." If appointed, applicants must successfully complete an oral interview, background investigation, self-contained breathing apparatus facepiece fit-test, physical ability test, medical examination, and a drug/alcohol screen. The Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) must be completed within a specified time limit. CPAT consists of eight stations which include a stair climb, hose drag, equipment carry, ladder raise and extension, forcible entry, search, rescue, and ceiling breach & pull.
