INDIANAPOLIS --

Indianapolis fire investigators blame the cold weather for a rash of blazes set at abandoned homes.

Firefighters have responded to 20 such fires in the last month, the latest Friday night on the city's east side. Capt. Rita Reith said all of the blazes were likely set by homeless trying to stay warm.

"They'll use whatever available materials they have, whether it's newspaper clothing, a mattress that's left by somebody else, wood from outside.

A captain with the Clinton Fire Department died yesterday (Oct. 21), hours after working out while on duty, according to The Clarion-Ledger.

Capt. John Thurman was found unconscious at approximately 5 p.m. by someone walking through a park that sits next to Fire Station 3. He was transported to Jackson Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The 21-year fire veteran's cause of death is still unknown, the newspaper report said.

A Georgia firefighter collapsed Saturday while assisting on a medical call.

Gary D. Street, 60, was stricken after moving a fire department vehicle at the scene of an injured person, according to Chief J.J. McClure of the East Lake Sinclair Vol. Fire Department.

"He moved the squad so the ambulance could get to the patient, who had fallen off a ladder," McClure said.

Members, who noticed Street didn't reappear after he moved the vehicle, found him unresponsive, and started administering care, McClure said.

Orlando's new fire station 1 is costing the city a lot of money. The new fire station 1 in downtown Orlando isn't complete yet, but cost estimates are hitting $21 million.

The city has built other stations for about $4 million. The city says fire station 1 will be its main headquarters. But people are still wondering about some of the extra amenities.

The 60,000 square-foot state-of-the-art facility will be the new fire station number 1.

Firefighters in Orlando say their firehouse is making them sick. As a result, the city is considering spending millions to tear the old building down.

Firefighters have complained about possible mold issues at station number 9 on Mercy Drive, since 2000.

The city has spent at least $100,000 on studies and even more to fix the problems at the firehouse.

Sep. 25--Two Kerr County men are facing charges of violating the Texas Clean Air Act after allegedly burning hazardous materials Sunday afternoon.

The case, which now is in the county attorney's hands, may be the first of its kind locally, according to Kerr County Environmental Health Director Ray Garcia.

County Attorney Rex Emerson said Thursday the charge is a Class B misdemeanor, punishable by fines up to $2,000 and a jail term of up to six months.
