Hello all,

I am currently attending a junior college fire academy and will finish both my basic fire fighter training and EMT-B training in late-August. I worked in the private sector for a year after graduating from UT-Austin. I am very interested in staying in Texas, specifically around the DFW area. Here are my questions:

First, can anyone point me toward the best resources (along with Fire House, of course) for finding jobs in Texas. Or does anyone know of fire departments hiring fire fighters with EMT-B.

Secondly, when should I start applying? While I'm training or once I'm certified?

Thank you,

E

Here are the two best sites for Texas FF hiring:

http://www.tcfp.state.tx.us/employment.asp

http://tml.org/classifieds/classifieds_fire.html

Generally, most postings will be found on both sites, but I have seen from time to time that a city may be posted on one site and not the other.

Oh and Hook 'Em Horns! I graduate from UT-Austin this summer.

I was considering moving to texas and was looking in that area as well and there are(were) a ton that were listing upcoming tests. I pulled up mapquest and looked at all the suburban areas around the area and then pulled up the websites for those town/cities and looked at their HR/employment sites and the fire dept site. If they are not currently hiring a lot have notification email they send out and you could sign up for those.

good luck!

Most of the departments around DFW don't require certifications, so just start taking all the test that are offered. There are just a handful I can think of that require you to certified, and that number is getting smaller every year.

Any truth to FWFD offering a certified test some time in the future?

I have heard that same rumor, but just that - a rumor. A friend of mine is planning on taking said test...if it materializes.

I heard the PD is already offering a certified test. It makes sense in these financially challenging times.

I imagine the fast track concept has been saving Houston FD a ton of money over the years

Every recruit for FWFD goes through the fire academy. They used to do fast track years ago and it didn't work out well. I'd be willing to bet they have an open test (for everyone) and no fast track.

ahhh.... Houston. I spoke with HFD recruiting last week. They said they would be offering Fast Track classes every 6 months.

Now is this true or just a rumor? Cause I have heard they might have a hiring freeze? Saw it on another post also.

wouldn't get too excited about the fast track at fort worth...they tried it once with bad results and will not do it again. but if you want to be a cop they are trying one here soon so have at it.

Again just rumor...but anyway - a friend of mine who is HFD said Chief Boriskie came by his house (Boriskie was a Jr. and Sr. Captain at his house in years past) and said that Houston would be hiring around 100 a year instead of the 300 a year clip they've been on for quite a while.
