Henrico VA County Seeks Firefighters/ALS Providers
Application Deadline: August 3, 2008
The Henrico County Division of Fire seeks both qualified Advanced Life Support (ALS) providers and qualified individuals to apply for Career Firefighters. The Division’s new ALS Supplemental Pay Plan leads the region in pay and benefits for ALS Firefighters. This Recruitment is ALS preferred by not required to apply.
Job Information: Engages directly in firefighting, rescue, fire prevention and education, equipment operation and maintenance, fire station maintenance, community service, training activities and the delivery of basic and advanced life support EMS functions for the Division of Fire.
Base Firefighter Salary: $39,105 Annually
Base Firefighter/EMT Cardiac or EMT Intermediate Salary: $42,950 Annually*
Base Firefighter/EMT Paramedic Salary: $45,011 Annually*
* Base Salary for ALS providers is effective after successfully meeting Division of Fire ALS requirements.
Henrico has an aggressive Career Development Plan. Participation in the plan will net you a 4.8% raise on years 2,4,6,8. Historically Henrico has received a cost of living raise of 4% also. This combination makes for very decent earning potential.
For EMT's this could equate to approximately $64,000 after 8 years
For PM's this could equate to approximately $74,000 after 8 years
Intermediates fall some where in the middle.
To sum up you get a 8.8% raise every other year until year 8 of employment, not going to find many jobs with that kind of earning potential out there.
ALS Supplemental Pay Plan Information:
• ALS providers meeting the Division’s guidelines may receive the ALS Supplement pay outlined below within the first year of employment after meeting all requirements.
• Virginia Certified EMT-Intermediate/Cardiac Technicians may receive a 4-step pay increase (approximately 9.6%) over base salary.

Does Henrico Co. include Richmond the city or is it the surrounding area?? I'm not too familiar with VA that far south. Also how many do they plan on hiring? Any word on past tests, how fast they process things or anything else that could give a brother some info?

Henrico County is a seperate department that is on the northern, western and eastern borders of the Richmond. As most Cities in Virignia, Richmond is an independant city and is not part of any county. Chesterfield borders the south borders of the city and they may be taking apps too.
From what I was told last week, Richmond is still using the current list and will hire maybe 2 or 3 classes off of it before it expires. They have a lot of firefighters leaving under the drop plan this year.
They do make mutual runs and are all part of the metro operations for rescue, and haz mat.
They move pretty fast once the app's are in and testing moves fair quick to. Probably from what I was told they may hire as many as 50 or more off the new list.
They have a study guide as well. You need to contact them at the links provides.
Good Luck!! BRO!

FWIW...
I investigated a warehouse fire in Henrico, VA in the spring. From what I can see, this is a very squared away and professional FD. I was very impressed.

I know this is off topic of Henrico but, did you here this from a credible source? Capt. Williams from RFD told me 2 months ago that there would only be 1 more hire off the current list for a academy starting Jan. '09
This is great news if they are hiring more than 1 more class off this list! :D

Richmond City is still working a list and has been for some time. They are a fire rescue only department. They do run ems first responce but they do not staff ambulances. EMS is handled by RAA-Richmond Ambulance Authority- who does both non emergency service as well as handle 911 EMS for the city.
Chesterfield County borders Richmond to the south and is a very large dual role fire/ems department. They had been purely ALS on their ambulance staffing, but have recently gone to tiered staffing on their buses. There are also Volunteers in the fire department as well as 4 volunteer rescue squads in the county. Chesterfield did a test this spring and due to the retirement rate will probably test again next spring. I do not think they carry a list. Their cheif just retired as well so there may be some upcoming changes.
Henrico county borders the northern half of Richmond and is also a dual role fire/ems agency. I know there are also a couple vol rescue squads and I think the county has volunteer fire as well. I think henrico does work a list so it has been a while since they have tested.
Richmond is also quite a bit cheaper to live in than northern VA. It is a metropolitan area of about 1million, and is more like a really big small town than it is a big city. There is also a big movement revitalizing the downtown area as a residential community. there have been a few high rise condos go in as well as a lot of old warehouse and commercial space converted. Richmond was also just named as honorable mention in Mens Journal as one of the best places to live in the U.S.
Henricon is very well respected and would be great places to work!

What are the paid hours like? Is it similar to how Prince William works (paid guys during the day and volunteers at night) or is it 24 hr staffed by paid guys and volunteers help out when and where needed? Much chance for overtime?

Henrico works a 56 hr work week 24 hr shifts as well as Richmond City. Its a 3 week cycle that start on a Tuesday and ends on a Wensday so you work...
Tues, Thurs, Sat, Mon, Fri, Sun, Wen.
Also they have 3 shifts...
Henrico is all career staff exluding the volunteer rescue squads within the county....... (That I know of)

While there are volunteers in the county, they are "county" volunteers. The volunteers don't own any stations, vehicles, or equipment. They are assigned a mini-pumper at Fire Station 5, but often ride with the career staff at the stations closest to thier homes.
There are something like 12 active volunteers in the county, so the county doesn't hesitate to advertise itself as an "all career" department.
Henrico has 20 engine companies, 5 tower ladders, 3 heavy rescues, and 11 (soon to be 12) ALS ambulances. There's also support equipment such as tankers, brush trucks, air & light vehicle, etc. The county is divided into three battalions, with a District Chief overseeing the daily operations.
There are currently 525 employees, a little less than 200 of these are ALS providers. EMT-I's get a 9% pay incentive, and EMT-P's get a 14% pay incentive. The ALS providers in stations with a medic unit generally ride it every 3-4 days, the ALS providers in non-medic stations ride the ambulance far less.
Henrico is one of the 11 state-funded regional haz-mat teams in Virginia, and is a core member of the Central Virginia Technical Rescue Team (along with Chesterfield, Richmond, and Hanover). The Dive Team also responds regularly with Richmond and Chesterfield on water rescue incidents.
All front-line engines and heavy rescues are Pierce Quantums, the towers are Dashs and Lances. The department's currently expecting delivery of a PUC for Engine 1, and Quantum pumper for Engine 6, and two new IH/PL Custom ambulances.
Let me know if you want anything else....

The County HR section and the FD HR section work closely on the hiring process, and the actual written test information is kept pretty close HR folks.
There is a written test, the "real" CPAT, background checks, and interviews you must pass to move throughout the process.
As for the number that are anticipated to test, your guess is as good as mine. The numbers seem to go up-and-down from year to year. I would expect at MINIMUM there will be at least two recruit schools hired from this list.

Hi, i know this is a little off topic but i have a question. My husband is in the army and in Iraq right now but in about 7 to 9 months he will be returning to Virginia and wants to become a firefighter/EMT. He wants me to try to get some information on what he has to do when he gets back to do that. If anyone on here can help me with this that would be great.
Thank You

I am coming down to Henrico this weekend to take the CPAT but just had a few questions regarding the background check for the county.
-What kinds of things will they look at?
-What kinds of things are they looking for regarding disqualifiers?
-What will I be required to do after filling out the background packet? (ie, will I have to come back down to meet with a background investigator before and after they do their background check?)
-How long does this process typically take?
-Any other info I should know?
I've never done a background check and just want to make sure I am prepared for what it entails. Thanks!

As for Henrico's background check process, I can't speak in certain terms, but based on other checks that I've either gone through or been familiar with, you could possibly expect any of these:
Credit report
High school & college transcript check
Local, state, and federal criminal background checks
Speak with current and former employers
Speak with family members and/or friends and/or references
Speak with neighbors
Tons of references
Again, Henrico may use any, some, or none of these.
As for the process itself, I don't have any idea about who gets called and how scores effect your standing. This information is not provided openly, which I think is a good thing.

I talked with Becky a few minutes ago and here is what she had to say. The next step will be interviews (I'm guessing they only spend money on background checks for those with conditional offers after interviews?) since she didn't mention anything about backgrounds being the next step (and you usually have like a 30 page booklet to fill out for backgrounds, which we haven't done). She wasn't 100% sure on when they would take place but she thought it would be the middle to end of Jan. Not everyone that took and passed both tests will be moved to interviews. She said they will evaluate both scores and rank us accordingly and the top from those ranks will get interviews. Becky transferred me to Pat to get a timeline on when we should be hearing from them next, but I had to leave a voicemail. Sounds like we shouldn't expect to hear anything till after the holidays though but don't quote me on that!

It sounds like the only thing they're going to look at will be the test scores? Nothing to do with qualifications, degrees or certificates? If so, I'm not looking so hot. I barely made the cut off with a 84.86 score on the written test.

I think the only thing you get preference for, if I remember correctly, is ALS certification and probably veterans points. I'm not sure when they would be added either. From what I understood, they would just be looking at test scores for interview invites. I'm not sure where you stand in rankings with an 84.86 either as nobody on here really posted their scores besides the two of us. Hard to say...
I will definetly let everyone know when I hear more.

Yeah, the ALS thing must be true. I figure if you're an ALS provider and passed the CPAT you're at least going to get an interview. Hired or not, an interview seems pretty much guaranteed.
By the way, how did you feel about the CPAT? I passed with 1 minute, 20 seconds to spare. Honestly, (and not to sound ****y) I didn't find it nearly as challenging as people portrayed it to be. What'd you think?

Pat said they will be contacting us the last week of December.
I've taken the CPAT before and passed with a MUCH better time than I got on Saturday. I haven't been working out much since I started my ALS class about 3 months ago so I'm not in as good of shape as I was before and I could tell by the end as I was wearing down. I've always found it to be a bit of an easy test though but I guess it's as unbiased as you can get...Pass/Fail that's it.

I know what you mean with working out and such. I haven't had as much time either with work and I'm taking the EMT-B course now (test out on Thursday!), so I wasn't in the shape I would have perferred either. One question for guys that have recently done this before. When do they test for tobacco? I figured at the medical test after background checks. I haven't used in about 3-4 weeks and just want to make sure that I'm going to be ok even if they were to screen at the interview which I don't think they should since its a no tobacco policy once hired. Any input?

Been reading some of the posts and will give my two cents....according to the Henrico Fire Dept. site they are supposed to do backgrounds before interviews, basically you are a "certified" candidate before you go in front of an interview board....seeing that Henrico seems pretty organized especially compared to, cough cough the city that is near us that starts with an R, I would expect they did it in correct order....now in terms of paperwork for the backgrounds, i've seen them done in two ways, a lot of filling out forms or just a few forms, a name and a social....so not sure....doesn't really matter I suppose anyway.....I have my interview on the 13th also so hopefully that will go well...i feel much more confident with this process over the RIC one, everything seems very structured. However, I am not betting on getting in the first go around seeing that I am not ALS certified. I have my EMT-B though but nonetheless. Anyone hear how many they are interviewing? Anybody hear the latest on approx. how many will get hired from this process? Will they rank us and hire off a list? Do we have to go through a second interview, (nothing on the site says anything about that, but still curious)? I'll let you guys know how the interview goes. Good luck!

I had my interview on Tuesday. Have no idea how it went, but they said we will all find out within 2 weeks. Heard from one of the guys that supervised the CPAT that they are hiring 21. Most likely they interviewed little more then double that number. Also, he said that usually there are not too many ALS certified applicants. Saw that you are getting yours which will definitely put you closer to the top most likely. Training is said to start March 16th. One good thing I heard at the interview which I'm sure you did too was IF you don't make it you will stay on the list for the next class scheduled in Fall, so that is good news. You have any questions?

What I'm skeptic about is how you all received a call on December 26th when county offices were closed on this day and didn't open til the following Monday. Also the background checks are given BEFORE the interview process. And from what I hear there is NO possible way you could have had 1 minute and 20 seconds left on the CPAT. I'm skeptic. I would also think they would let everyone know at the same time about whether they went on to the interview process or not. Instead of leaving people waiting.

Not sure what to be skeptic about? We are not lying if that is what you mean. We all took the CPAT and passed then. They then called the highest test scores who passed the CPAT on the 26th. I work for Chesterfield in a different dept. other then Fire and know just because MOST county offices are closed doesn't count for all of them. Sometimes essential locations, such as the Fire Dept. HQ have to remain open on Holidays. Since, they were there already and probably not busy it makes sense to call everyone that day. In terms of cut off, I got a 91% if that gives you an idea of what score you would need. Believe the minimum to get to the CPAT was an 84%. We aren't sure how many they took from the top, but it is anywhere between 30-50. Right now the Chief has the recommendation list from the board on his desk for the first class. Just waiting for his final approval. Hope this helps.

Think what you want dude...they called me around 10:30 on the 26th. Don't know what to tell you. And to have 1:20 left on the CPAT is VERY doable. I've had 2 min left before. If you've been going through this process for very long, you'd know that lots of departments only contact the people that move on. They don't have the time to contact every single person. Background checks are an on going thing...some places do them before interviews, others do them throughout the whole process. Henrico didn't have us meet with investigators and fill out a 25 page packet. They just got DMV records and criminal history reports and that's about all as far as I know.

Does anyone know if Henrico hired a class yet of current list?

Just got a letter about CPATs coming up again over the next couple of months. Just updating anyone that is currently still in the process for here. The last class that went through started right around 3 months from the official CPAT date. That would put us right around January time frame for a new class.

I want to see if anyone has any input for me regarding where I stand.
So I got another letter to come retake the CPAT for Henrico FD. Last time, I took an interview with them but wasn't informed at the time that I should begin getting my Ohio background and DMV records together. Due to some miscommunication between Ohio government and myself it was about 5 weeks after my interview before my Ohio background check (clean btw) finally got turned in, at which point they claimed to had already made decisions on hirings. So I'm not 100% positive, but from the sound of it the delay getting my paperwork in cost me a possible job offer.
Since last time, I have finished my EMT-I class and am taking the national registry October 15th, about 1 1/2 weeks before the CPAT. If I pass the NREMT-I test, will I still get preference points and if so, will this essentially guarantee me a job offer as long as I do decent in my interview and pass my background check? I know a lot of departments in the VA area do this but I don't know if Henrico does. Any thoughts/inputs/advice????
