I have taken only 1.

Long Beach in 1975. There were 6,000 taking the exam @ The Arena. The floor was covered with tables and chairs. Before the start of the exam I stood up and was looking at my compitition.....Remember that there is always room for you when you take an exam and DON"T let the odds worry you. If I can make it so can you.

Peninsula Township 2007....hired
Grand Rapids 2008...comin up in a week
Port Huron 2008...comin up in a week
Norfolk 2008...applied in February...havn't heard anything
Virginia Beach 2008...just applied

Since I am signed up for a 6 month long, 5 day a week, 40 hr a week medic "boot camp" style class, i really can't afford to miss any days between now and next April. I would love to apply for jobs between now and then, but will really have to limit the ones I apply to since I can't affor to miss any time during medic class since it's so fast paced. It's a shame so many places are hiring this year because that means they won't be hiring for a couple years. More time to prepare I guess!

I am actually saving right now for a brand new 2009 2.3 Liter 4 cylinder, 5 speed manual, 2 wheel drive Regular cab Ford Ranger for the long commutes to some of these places, since my Z71 right now sucks for gas mileage.

The one's I'd like to, and plan on applying for:

Saginaw, MI
Flint, MI
Warren, MI
Royal Oak, MI
Hamtramck, MI
Worcester, MA
San Jose, CA
San Francisco, CA
Philadelphia, PA
Baltimore City, MD
St. Louis, MO
Buffalo, NY
Pittsburgh, PA
Chicago, IL
Indianapolis, IN
Virginia Beach, VA

zachis4wheeling-

I noticed that you are looking at Pittsburgh, just a heads up but you have to be a city resident to apply and have to remain one throughout the process. And for Philadelphia you must be a resident for 12 months prior to being hired.

Have you checked out anything south of VA? Charlotte has a hiring process every year, word on the street is that Raleigh is going to be hiring soon too (due to increasing city limits and major increases in population over the past few years). Neither Charlotte or Raleigh have residency requirements.

Good luck to you all.

Charlotte almost always begins hiring in the first 1/4 of the year. So we are looking roughly around Jan- Mar. And from what I have gathered by talking to a friend who works in Raleigh, they are looking at doing the same in '09 as well.

I am not bragging, but I have taken more test in here than anyone else. Why, I just sucked at it for a long time before I got my program on wheels.

I got a stack of rejection/status notices about 2-3 inches thick. I did get hired at a young age (20), but kept trying to promote and climb the ladder since.

Not a bad idea if you can swing the plane ticket a couple of trips. LAFD is hiring a lot of Firefighters with the baby boomers retiring at an alarming rate. 250+ for the next 4-5 years.

I am in the final stages of the process...already received my conditional job offer, just waiting for med and psych results.

Also, I've heard that LAFD will accommodate out-of-state testers to get a couple of steps of the process out of the way in one trip.

Good Luck!

wow...I'm considering applying but i'm in NYC...the trip kind of discourages me...but I'm interested.....I'm thinking about applying in '09....

do you know what they will do to accomodate us out of state testers?

is it true that I can pass a CPAT over here on the East coast and they will accept it?

I heard the CPAT comes before the written examination...is that right...?

thanks....

Yes, you actually have to have your CPAT to apply. In fact, I have to retake my CPAT because you need to keep it current until you are appointed to a position. This process has taken me about a full year.

As for your other questions, I would just call L.A. Personnel. Their number is (213) 473-9060
