Wildland masks

Has anyone tried any of the wildland masks? I am thinking of getting one and would like to hear any feedback. Here are a couple of links to what I am looking at.

Other options may cost you less and accomplish same. We use Scott twin filter adapters (approx $20) with replaceable filters ($9/pair). Use with any Scott facepiece and there are filters for many hazards. Full face protection at a low price.

I have been told by more than one senior BLM and Forest Service Firefighter that these filters do little to protect your lungs from the tiny particles of smoke that actually do damage.

They are effective at keeping the heat off of your face.

We don't use them, and I have seen less than 5 in use over the past 4 fire seasons in my region (Idaho)

I have one that a buddy gave to me.

I think the only thing it would be good for is to increase heat exhaustion.

It might be good for that early morning hike in when there is a bad inversion, but actively fighting fire...nah.

Those masks are excellent for "staging and raging"(CDF, municipalities) but if you do any actual work (Forest Service, BLM and some private engines) don't bother.

Do not waste your money. I have a HotShield. I do not know how much it filters out but it is really hard to breath through and it heats up instantly just standing still. It tires you out just trying to breathe.

I use a cotton bandanna and my face & neck protector along with my goggles for heat protection and just the bandanna and goggles for smoke. I have tried the Scott filter adapters and they are also too hot to wear for very long unless you are just standing still. Just my opinion.
