Tater Knob Fire Tower

MOREHEAD, December 4, 2008 - A fire of unknown origin burned the cab of Tater Knob Fire Tower located on the Daniel Boone National Forest in Bath County. Tater Knob was the last remaining fire tower on the national forest and is listed on the National Historic Lookout Register. The Tower is currently unsafe and the area is closed to the public.

The tower was built in 1934 by the CCC. The structure on top was rebuilt in 1959. This fire tower was staffed daily during the fire season from 1934 until the early 1970’s. In 1993, the tower was restored and opened to the public, with the help of the Tater Knob Fire Tower Restoration Committee, the Kentucky Bicentennial Commission, the Bath County Historical Society, the Frenchburg Job Corps Center, the Forest Service and many volunteers who donated their time, expertise and money.

Forest Service personnel will meet with the media on Friday, December 5, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at Clear Creek Market parking lot. From Salt Lick take KY 211 south 4 miles, turn left (east) on Forest Road 129 go approximately 1 mile and turn right into parking lot.

I hope the tower can be repair. It will be a shame if this historical structure is lost forever. If this is determined to be arson I hope they can make a arrest. The tower overlooked Cave Run Lake and drew hunderds of visits annually.
