Hello guys,
I have a question or two to throw here so maybe I can get a few answers.
We asked for new gear for our grant (the works- pants, coats, hoods, gloves, boots, and helmets) 31 sets in all. Now most of our gear that we currently use is from the late 80's to the early 90's, maybe 9 guys have gear from 2000 to now.
We recieved a direct deposit request last week from AFG. We now have found out that they do not want to give us all the money we asked for. I know that part is normal but this is the part I find weird. They itemized what they would pay for ie: 9 pants 11 coats 12 helmets.... they are no where near what we need. Why would they do this instead of just saying we will only give you X amount of money to buy what you need instead of the amount you asked for? Also is there anything else we can do to show them we are in dire need for this gear so maybe they will bring their amount up?

How many firefighters did you put down on your application?
What percentage of compliant gear did you put down on your application?

Did you put down 31 firefighters or just 31 sets in the request details section to replace what you have?
In the Department Characteristics (Part I) section of the application, there is a question: How many active firefighters does your department have who perform firefighting duties?
Generally, only the gear which is deemed unsafe will be replaced. Thus, if you requested 10 sets, with 50% current compliance, you would only see 5 sets awarded.
See if you can find out how you applied, and it might better help us answer your questions.

I agree that it sounds like you had an inconsistency between quantity you requested and manpower. I have heard of this happening with SCBAs on occassion due to riding positions vs. numbers of SCBAs requested. Try talking with them and understand what is really going on. Otherwise, if you send some additional info, as SLY states, we can all help you figure it out.

It was put in as 31 active ff and gear to replace all that we have. Most gear is old, damaged, or unservicable.

Old is a perspective, not an age. What they look at is the counts of each year from 1-12 and those with no gear. In lower population/call areas they're reducing to only those sets over 7-8 years old, not 5. So they're going off of the ages listed and if the gear is in that 5-8 range then appeal it on the basis of safety because it's unfit for wear based on NFPA inspection metrics. Age is only part of the unsafe equation.
If the gear is all older than 8 years that then this makes no sense at all. Make sure they have the right department for the reduction request, wouldn't be the first time someone transposed numbers, we all do that. :)
