Hi I am new here. I am currently in a hiring process for a fire department. I am at the last stage in the process which is the medical. I am very physically fit, but I have genetic hypertension. I am wondering if anyone has ever heard of someone not passing a medical because of high blood pressure. My high blood pressure is currently untreated, and in the physical they got a reading of 160/80, partially due to being nervous.

Yes, your elevated blood pressure can, and will, bump you. Get a copy of NFPA 1582 (2007 ed.) It will give you a run down.

But here's the thing......your blood pressure, while high, is not out of control. You can control it with healthy eating, working out, and the right combination of meds.

Trust me, after years of trying to get mine down, a new Fire District doc told me I was on the wrong meds. When I asked him what I should be taking, he told me that it would be unethical to suggest something without being my primary doctor (sly, but effective).

I switched over to him, and within 1 week, my blood pressure went from 148/98 to a consistent 120/70. It's been 4 years now, and no reoccuring issues.

Good Luck to you,

FG

For candidates who are not currently employed with the department they are trying for yet, will being medicated in itself disqualify you??

Hey I dont know if this is your kind of thing, but if you want to try and help it out, try Acupuncture. It seems kind of strange and weird to do, but it actually helps out quite a bit.
