Hey guys,
Applying to Charlotte for this upcoming test. I am from New England, can anyone provide any information about the area. I have only visited the area a few times, so i am looking for insight from those of you who live there. Cost of living, crime, good place to raise a family, schools...things like that. Thanks and good luck to you all.
Oh and any rumors id and how many are planning on being hired? Also, how long is the list good for?

I will be there again this year. I have heard that on average it takes 3-5 times of testing before you get hired. Now that's not to say you can't do it in 1 or 2. Good luck to everyone this year. sbfd, if you go to www.bestplaces.net/col/ you can enter info rom where you currently are and then where you want to go, and it will give you a comparison of several different things. Cost of living being the main one. It will also compare food cost, health care costs, etc. Hope that will be of some help to you.

Charlotte was one of the harder written tests that I've taken, but it was also very fair as i recall (aka if you were smart you'd do well and move on). The test started off with a memorization/direction following/math segment at the beginning that was a little tough, but i made it through ok, the rest was a typical civil service test.
A buddy of mine I took the test with got hired (first try) and LOVES it. He is on a busy Ladder Co. and goes to a pretty fair amount of fire. He and his wife bought a GREAT condo in the Ballentyne section of the city for around 140k....and it is AWESOME i went and stayed with him a while back and it was really a top notch place in a great part of the country.

Hey everyone my names is gary i just finished with my fire protection degree this past year and this is my 3rd year trying out with the charlotte fire department. first year ('07) i passed the written and cpat and got a rejection letter in june of 08. last year i got to an interview and did not make it. everyone has to remeber where in a real volitial time with the economy so expect hiring to be slim. hopefully third time is a charm. i have also heard that it takes an average of 3-5 times before you get hired. its a long process if i can give anyone any advice as to what to expect just let me know, good luck.

Maybe someone can answer some of my questions?? I am from MI and was thinking about taking the exam..
- Do out of staters have to come down each time (seperate) for the steps in the process?
- Any solid info on the # posible to hire and how is the economy and future looking down there?
- Does having a medic help and do they run ALS and do they transport?
- How long is the academy and will all of my MI certs transfer (EMT-P/FF)?
- Is there recruiters that I can call and talk to?
I know some of these questions have been posted in the previous 08 thread, but I was looking for the most updated info. Thanks for any info and good luck to all that test.

I was just looking over the registration process and noticed the " Personal History" and the " Background Questions". I didnt fill them out when I did my Initinal Registration. I filled out the form and cliked submit. My question is am I missing something, did I need to fill these out when I put in my application, or are these after you past the written. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advace.

Track, if my memory serves me correct, you will fill the rest of it out after you pass the written.
FF, Yes out of staters have to come for each part of the test. It sucks but it will be worth it if you get hired.
A friend of mine told me that this is going to be a good year to get hired. They have several guys retiring and then have to backfill for slots already open. Wasn't sure on exact #'s though. I do know that they always run a minimum of 1 class a year. It is a long process though so hang in there.
Medic may help but they do not run als YET. I have heard it rumored that they are eventually going to start.
The academy is 21 weeks and no your current certs don't count. Everyone goes through the same 21 weeks as the others.
From what my friend told me, the economy is good as far as public safety goes there. They have not yet cut much if anything from the FD and PD budgets.
As far as talking to someone, go to http://www.charmeck.org/Departments/Fire/Home.htm
That may be able to answer questions better and they will have all the phone #'s for you to call. Hope this helps guys. Good luck in march.

I got a call today as well, informing me that the test was moved to the Westin Ballroom. I took a look at the Recruitment page on Charlotte's website and it had some more details. Everyone who registered before 1-28 will test 3-07 at the Westin. Those who registered 1-29 and later will test 3-14. Good luck!

Hey Guys, in respose to some of the questions about the new testing location. I have heard from a BC of charlotte that they are having to change the location of the test to accomadate for the large number of applicants. the hotel can hold around 1300 people. since there are two test sessions its a pretty safe bet that there are around 2000-3000 applicants, more than any other testing year. alot of it has to do with the high number of job loss around the state and country and everyone trying to get on with a "pretty secure" job. they only hired 20 guys off of the 2008 process so i think this year is not gonna look good for hiring. best of luck

UUUMMM I am pretty sure they are goin to need more than twenty this year they are already working on Station 40 in north east Charlotte. But yes the number of Apps. this year is crazy for them to have to have two different testing dates. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE !!!! If you havnt been through the process for Charotte the written test isn't bad but start getting prepared for the CPAT by running and working out .... you don't want to be one of the many that they have to stick with IV and fluids!
Gary4cfd
02-03-2009, 09:29 AM
Well considering they told us in the 2008 process that they were to hire between 40-60 and there is only one class of 20, i think its safe to assume that the number isnt going to change drastically. And that was with station 39 that just opened in december 2008. Now this doesnt mean they wont hire a significant amount of recruits. I know the past two years i have done the process they havent hired the amount they said they might or could. with this being said just make sure your papers are in order, your references are good. and go all out on the cpat. you only get on shot.

I am looking for some help here.. I am going to be coming down to take the test this March and I have a few questions. First I would like to know if anyone has information on the salary other than the starting pay. I am a full-time firefighter right now and I am looking at a starting salary that is a couple thousand lower than what I am making now. I know with my current dept. the salary increases significantly after the first couple years. Anyone know what its like in Charlotte? Secondly, the dept I work for is a member of IAFF and our union is strong. I know NC is a right to work state and I am wondering how much leverage the union has in Charlotte? "Registration for the 2009 Written Exam has CLOSED. Due to the overwhelming responses, registration for the written exam closed on February 15th."

I know I counted 16 per row, in the rows around me, but I was all the way in the front. I could have varried a little in the back. I made the orientation on the 20th, and have the CPAT scheduled on the 26th. As for rates of failure for the test, 50% seems like a reasonable number to me. Many departments, even those that use some form of the Combat Challenge as a physical testing standard report high failure rates for their candidates. The key is to not get ****y, no matter how physically fit you may be. Keep training and good luck!

Oh, and regarding the 40+ year-old woman struggling with some of the events, I wouldn't assume that she's going to fail. She still has two months worth of training possible before the Final CPAT in June. Don't count anyone out.

I haven't heard anything new. CPAT run-thrus are scheduled this month, and the Final CPAT tests are in June. I figure even if you score a passing time on the practice, you won't hear anything until at least late June/early July, when everyone has been given three opportunities to pass. Charlotte is actually moving quickly through the process, compared to most departments.

You say they are moving fast compared to other departments. Did they set a date for the academy yet or are they just testing to keep the applicant pool fresh?

05-07-2009, 05:31 AM
I haven't heard of an academy start date. At the CPAT Orientation, the Capt. leading the classroom portion stated that they were looking to hire 50 firefighters (2 classes), if funding was available (FY 2010 starts on July 1st). They had a class going on when we were down there, so I would guess that they intend to hire. Also, I don't think that Charlotte "keeps a list" like other cities. When they test, they hire (knock on wood).
When I was in the running for my current department (Columbia, SC), after the initial round of testing, I didn't hear anything for months. All told, it took eleven months to get hired, and the process itself was much less organized than it has been with Charlotte. Just be patient, and you should hear something. Good luck.

Hope training for the CPAT is going well for everyone. I know the orientation helped out a lot, saw how each event is all about technique and strategy. If any of you are on Twitter I suggest following the CFD at http://twitter.com/charlottefd gives live updates on major calls the city is running. Figure we're all trying to get on, this may only add fuel to the fire...no pun intended. While your at it, if you want, follow me as well... http://twitter.com/AaronStevens. Did anyone else take the CPAT today? I passed, but was not happy with my time. This was my first time running the CPAT, and I thought the marked path between events was redundant in parts (i.e. walk down one direction to come back up where you started, then turn left, instead of making the straight line), but I understand that it's the nature of the CPAT. Good luck to everyone who's yet to take it.
Also, any word on how many are taking the CPAT? I heard 1600 at the orientation, but today, I heard that roughly 900 were taking the Timed Runs.

I went through this morning. I passed with 2 minutes to spare, but a lot of people didn't. I saw a lot of yellow cards. As far as the walking distance being redundant, thats because the walking distance between each event is mandated by the CPAT test. If you shorten the distance then it is not the official CPAT test and the new test would to be validated.

Yeah, the CPAT is a decent measure of physical fitness, but maybe in the future, some aspects of it can be tweaked. Prior to yesterday, I've only ever taken a Combat Challenge type test, which places more emphasis on upper-body strength and less on a person's cardio fitness/stamina (because there aren't any events with a mandated time, like the stair climb). I finished in 9:41 yesterday, which isn't good, but the ceiling breach was easy, and I felt like I could have done a few more events.
You said you saw a lot of yellow cards? What time did you take the test? I was in the eleven o clock session, and I saw one person fail. What sucks for the people that passed yesterday is that everyone has the final opportunity to pass in June, which slows down the process.

I was at the CPAT yesterday and was told that about 950 signed up for the CPAT. The Captain who was my proctor told me that about 100 wouldn't even show up, so that lowers it down to about 800...you have to figure half won't pass...now we are down to 400-450...not bad! Good luck to everyone!

Got a phone call from CFD today scheduling my Background interview for July. Has anyone gone through this process before? If so any advice? I have been told that assembling your packet correctly is vital or to avoid careless errors some people make. Also just curious, what would you say is formal dress for a department interview, coming from the business world I'm accustomed to having to go all out for formal events, suit and what not, but didn't know if that's the route I should go for this interview.
Most importantly good luck to all! Hopefully we'll be meeting one another at recruit school before too long!

I had my background interview Monday. There were 6 people counting myself there for the 12:00. We sat for literally an hour and a half before anyone conducting the interview talked to us. The interview itself wasn't too bad, mine was with 2 people from the Civil Service Board. At the end I asked what their thoughts were on time frames and when one could hope to get a call if they were moving on. According to her, CFD plans to have 3 recruit classes with the first one starting as soon as September. The second in Dec or Jan and then one more after that. I got a call yesterday (Wednesday) from the recruitment office scheduling a polygraph in 2 weeks. It seems as if they are moving very quickly to get the first class filled. If you haven't gotten a call yet I wouldn't be deterred, as I am sure they will be looking to fill the next two classes in the near future. Good luck to everyone!

FFM....I'd think they use the entire pool to fill the recruit classes. The more I've talked with various ppl from the department the more it seems as if they are looking to fill an early class, but don't worry too much if you're not it the first one, as I said I've been told they plan to have a total of three.
SBFD....Well yea, it is a formal interview, suit and all....the main focus of the interview was the personal history and background info you entered earlier in the process, however they do ask "typical interview questions" as well. Why you want to work for CFD, strengths, weaknesses, etc...Wasn't too sure what to expect, my first time through the process as well. You get finger printed then interview with a couple ppl not with CFD. Basically their prep work before they put you through the ringer with the poly....not looking forward to that, heard it's quite intimidatiing.

After taking my polygraph I talked with the interviewer and he said that he thinks the first class will start on the 3rd week of September or so. Followed by atleast one more class in probably January. And that the dept hopes to have one more class following that, but that is not definite. Obviously depends on the new budget and retirements.
He also strongly suggested researching panel interviews to be adequately prepared....anyone with previous experience and or advice?

My panel interview is on the 12th also, at 11:30. Name's Dave, by the way.
As far as the panel interview goes, I would say just act professionally and dress appropriately. If it's anything like the panel interview I took for Columbia (my current department), you will be presented with several scenarios to read through and answer, many of which will relate to situations in the work environment (i.e., "What would you do if you saw (x) occurring?"). The Charlotte interview may be totally different. I've never been through it, so I cant say for sure.

Then a little later I got a call from the woman doing my reference/employment checks (so they did this after my background/prepoly but before the poly itself). Then after taking the poly, the tester assigned my panel int. But don't lose hope if you haven't gotten a call yet, without trying to sound like a broken record it looks like they are moving unusually fast to get this first class filled, then another one a few months later.
Dave, my panel is at 10:30...wonder if they're only planning on an hour for the interview...if so that's bad at all. I'll keep a look out for you when I finish. The book I'm talking about is apparently out of print, but it is a Fire Engineering publication (1988). My Battalion Chief lent me his copy, and although it's old, it seems like many of the same principles would apply today. Here's a link to its Amazon.com listing:

As for my polygraph scheduling, I was called in the afternoon following my background interview. Unlike AppSt, I got a call from the background investigator today, almost a week after my polygraph test. I had assumed that my employment reference checks were done in the interval between the background and the poly. But, with as many applications as Charlotte has to sift through, it's understandable that certain steps are completed at different times for different applicants. Overall, the hiring process has been run extremely well.
The polygraph isn't bad, provided that you're honest. It was nervewracking for me, as it is for many people. Just try to relax.

The polygraph wasn't too bad. I will admit I was stressing over it, especially the night before. A few days before the test I was talking with a friend about how in my prepoly they were asking me if I had ever done drugs besides marijuana (they're exact words) and I stated no, they kept repeating are you sure, even someone else's prescription and I was like no. Then talking to him he goes, "well I've taken someone's allergy medicine before." I then began to panic trying to remember if I've ever taken a friends prescription for a cold or injury.
When you get to the polygraph you meet the tester, he is extremely personable and thoroughly explains everything...his background, the equipment, how it works, etc...he asks if there is anything you have thought of since your last interview that you wanted to mention, I brought up my uncertainty about medicine and he basically stated that all the dept cares about is for recreational purposes and doesnt care if you took someones flu meds. He also goes over every question he could possibly ask while hooked up to the machine to get a baseline of answers but also as time to discuss or explain. There were even questions that he then reworded to, i.e. "other than MINOR SITUATIONS have you lied....."
As Battle said the most important thing is to be 100% honest, it's intimidating enough being hooked up to all that equipment, I could feel my heart beating through my back, it'd be pretty tough to conceal lies.
Yea, after my test he then reviewed all my results as I sat there not sure what he was doing, he then told me he was reporting to the FD that I was honest and then gave me my date and time for the panel interview.
Be prepared to have the same questions asked repetitively, I spoke with one veteran FF and he said this was one of the most nerve racking aspects for him...he kept wondering "is the computer saying I'm lieing" but don't worry this is normal. And like I said the tester is very nice....talk to him ask questions, be honest, express concerns, he is not there to trick you.

I saw that you guys were having a hard time finding a book to properly prepare for a panel interview. A good book that I found that helped me a great deal in my most recent interview (not with CFD unfortunately) was a book called "Smoke your Firefighter Interview." Its written by Paul S. Lepore, and it has A LOT in good information such as interviewer scoring sheets, sample questions (with some example answers and reasoning for those answers), making a good first impression, and it even goes into what to expect at probationary orientation.
Like I said its a great book and I would highly suggest it to anyone pursuing a career in the fire service. Still waiting for my call from CFD, its not looking too good for me unfortunately, its only my first year applying. But I wish everyone luck who is moving along in the process.

Good luck to everyone still in the process, it seems evident that they may be planning for a second class so let's hope that's the case. Good luck to you jet.

Good luck jet, northern and 3fire. Taking the polygraph was not nearly as bad as I expected so don't worry to much about it, you do get the opportunity to talk to the guy if you've realized something after the fact, I myself asked him about two things that turned out to be complete non-issues but it's good if you do b/c he says those things could pop-up in your poly b/c you're worried about them. I was only hooked up to the machine for maybe 10 min. and that was it. He is a very nice gentleman who will talk to you a while and will explain everything twice. Please don't trust me on this, but as I understand it, if you get your polygraph and pass it, I think that means you have a chance at a panel interview, but don't quote me, I just don't think they would not go through the trouble of a background/poly if they didn't want to talk to you. Also, do not be alarmed if you don't hear from the background investigator, I never did and they never contacted my work or any of my references.
3fire... The background interview was when I was actually the most nervous because you're still in one of those weed-out spots. Of course dress in a suit, show up early and have your documentation EXACTLY like they want it, I had a second copy b/c I thought they needed it, but it never hurts to have a spare. They talk with you about why you're doing this, what are your strengths, examples of integrity, things of that nature. It's a good idea to think about these in detail and pick where your strengths and weaknesses are and any kind of real-life example you can bring to the table. You also get fingerprinted and sign your life away so they can investigate you. Also not a bad idea to practice "selling yourself" to them, i.e. how you speak, your mannerisms etc.
northern...Yes the polygraph is casual, I would recommend at a minimum, clean jeans and a short sleve polo, that's what I had as I was coming from work. You just never know who you will run into down there.

Something I forgot to mention was that to make sure that you are rehearsing these questions out loud so you know how your answers sound, it's something I've picked up on over the years due to some public speaking and it helps a lot. My wife poked fun a me alot b/c I was asking myself a question and then answering it but it took a lot of the butterflies away for both the background and panel.

Hey man the background wasnt that bad. Its a little intimadating. Make sure you are truthful and as elaborate as possible. they will ask you basic questions like "why do you want to be a fire fighter?" and Strengths and weaknesses. Hey El, this is just an idea. From everyone i have talked to at the CFD, they all claim that the applicants considered for hiring are put into an applicant pool and then decided on the best possible applicants to push through. It's a very generic answer they give, but im sure theres a little more to it than that. The first time i applied i never got an interveiw, and the year after that i got a call late in the year (November) I'm sure there going to be calling people up until January. Best of luck.

Everyone that I have talked to said that they were offered a conditional offer of employment after the interview. After the panel interview I was told to wait in the lobby in case they had additional questions. After about 5 to 10 minutes someone came in and talked to the receptionist. She asked me follow her to a back office. Once we were inside the office she told me that I was being offered a conditional offer of employment and that I needed to get my physical and get fitted for turnout gear and uniforms by Sept 18th. The letter that she gave me did not have a date for the academy or which academy that I would be in, but it did state that the earliest that I could recieve an official written offer of employment with a start date would be Oct 9th.

So me and KYhunter42 found an apartment literally right across the training academy so we can walk there. A third roommate would be awesome to split rent with for the academy. Jetfan,
Thanks for the info. I've heard Nov 2 is the projected start date of Class 82. I've got a good friend that was in Class number 80, he got about 3 weeks notice before he started the academy. He had the conditional job offer for a couple of months and just had to wait to hear a start date. Things were done a little differnent in the 2008 process, or at least for him. He didn't get fitted for uniforms or gear until he got an official job offer and start date.

I had the lucky fortune of meeting one of the guys fresh from class 80 at my dad's station today. Here were some of the things he told me about going through the recruit class... and please don't hold me to this in case they have changed things. He was in the same boat as some us, he had to wait for a couple of months after getting his letter before they assigned him a class.
1. They would run 4-5 miles every 3rd day
2. There are two scheduled live burns and multiple simulations at gaston county college's burn building
3. Crawling through the 18" pipe above ground sucks but can be done (albeit with some pain involved)
4. We will do lots of push-ups and sit-ups
5. Our class seniority at the end is based on our academic score, physical score and final exam score.
6. We will be able to look at a sheet on what openings there are within CFD once we are done with the academy.
7. Hope everyone knows how to polish a boot, because we will be doing it.
8. It's a good idea to pack your lunch so you're not busting butt to get somewhere and back in 1 hour.
9. The runs are military style group marches
10. Class hours are approximately from 7-5, if we don't get our drills done after 5, we're staying later.

Maybe someone can give my the info on CFD retirement and pension. I could not pull it up online, almost as if the page has an error. How many years and at what percent? Also do you get health care after you retire and how much (if any) extra is family on your insurance.
Thanks for the info...
kyhunter42
10-01-2009, 11:08 PM
Here is the link again. I just pulled it up to make sure that it works.
http://charlottefireretsys.org/page.php?8.0
(1) The age and Membership Service Credit requirements for service retirement are as follows:
a. Any age and 30 or more years of Membership Service Credit;
b. Age 50 years or older and 25 or more, but less than 30 years of Membership Service Credit
(2) Effective July 1, 1998, upon retirement pursuant to the provisions of Section 15 of this act, a Member shall receive a monthly benefit equal to two and six-
tenths percent (2.6%) of his Final Average Salary multiplied by his Membership Service Credit, Salary limits imposed by section 415 of the Internal Revenue Code, as amended, but not
less than nine hundred two dollars and seventy-five cents ($902.75).
Basically you can retire with 25 years of service if you are 50 years old. The percentage is 2.6% for every year of service. 25 years = 65%, 26 years = 67.6%, and so on. I hope this helps.
mkb909
10-02-2009, 11:22 AM
What I understand from CFD is that we will not have health benefits when we retire, we just missed out on that deadline. They take two highest years of salary and that is what determines your monthly pension, so in effect you're earning less per year, but pulling in more monthly when you retire because at that point you're not paying 13% into your pension anymore.

Thanks for all the info. I know I'm a year ahead but how does the budget look next year and is there a set # of academies? I missed this years testing. Will you ever have ambos and transport or run als engines. Is there any extra points for medic or residency? Thanks again.
battlecomedown
10-02-2009, 09:45 PM
I'm not sure about next year's budget. Charlotte's economy has subsided somewhat in the past year, though the city is still growing. As for CFD running its own ambulance service (which is currently provided in Mecklenburg County by MEDIC), in the future, who knows?
As for residency/medic points, Charlotte uses a general applicant pool in its hiring process, which means that if you pass the written and physical, you are in the running for the job at no less or better a position than everyone else that passed the tests. I know that many cities use a ranked list, and award points for veteran's status, residency, etc., but Charlotte is not one of them.
From my experience this year, and I think many of the people who went through it will agree, the Charlotte process is efficiently and professionally run. Most of the questions you could have about it are answered here:

Do they let you add or change an answer on your questionnaire before you are hooked up. I remembered some further information than what i put down.
Anybody have any tips for passing this
mkb909
10-10-2009, 12:44 PM
A look back on this thread will give you more detailed answers on what the polygraph is like, questions that are on it, etc. But for your immediate questions, you should have looked at your questionare during your background interview, but he will ask you if you have remembered something or need to change something. The only way to pass it is to be completely honest with him and on your questionaire, if there's something you think might affect you, bring it up, I did and even though it was completely irrelevant, it's still good to get it out in the open.

Passed my polygraph a couple of days ago. Scheduled for my panel interview next week! Any pointers or tips of what to expect from those who had the panel interview?

Got my phone call today! They will be sending out the letters for class 83 tomorrow. Academy starts Nov. 30. Anybody need a roommate? I found an apartment adjacent to the academy (Carrington Place Apartments). Two bedroom is approx. $900 w/ utilities.
