I am a 29Year old volunteer firefighter of 5years from a small town in Wisconsin and would love to try and become a career firefighter. I am almost done with my FF2 Certification and have many others; I am an EMT Basic and also have a Business degree. Now I have applied to a few openings in the last year and have even had one interview {witch I know means little more than I’ve got my feet wet} but have had know real luck it always seems like those that have gone through an academy and are much younger than me are the ones that seem to move on. So finally. My questions are dose age matter and should I stop with the certifications and just go to an academy?

One last thing I do understand that this won’t happen over night. What I am looking for is what would be my best course of action.

Thank you.

You're nowhere near too old so don't worry about that. Your BA, volunteer experience, and EMT cert are all excellent things. Go for the academy if you can afford it. That plus an AS in Fire Science would pretty much complete the ultimate firefighter's resume.

For reference: I'm 30, have a BA in graphic design, AS in fire science, EMT cert, no fire academy, no volunteer FF experience, and I'll be starting in a large department's academy in the spring. A few other things like construction experience, community service, and athletic achievements probably helped too but it really comes down to nailing the interview. You'll get better at that each time you do it, so keep it up.

Keep trying. You'll get hired. I got hired at 29 back in September. Just graduated the academy last week. Keep trying and everything will fall into place.
