Hi there, I am a new member to this website and decided to join to get some information and help.

I'm currently in school in Nova Scotia getting my business degree as well as a FF on the local volunteer fire department that gets about 200 calls a year. I attend about 80% of all calls and trainings. I have also taken my Medical First Responder Course.

Next year will be my 3rd year in University (hopefully completing the degree in 4 hears) and it will be my 2nd year on the department. I will be taking my 1001 Level 1 course throughout the year. After I take my level 1 through my department I plan on getting my Level 2 as well as Hazmat Ops on my own in one of the colleges in Alberta. I also plan on getting my EMR.

I have read all about the application process to the fire department in Calgary and in Edmonton but I still have a few questions.

1: To apply do I need to have my level 1/2, hazmat ops, and my EMR/MFR?
2: It says all throughout the application process if you are selected in the end you go to rookie training and all that? What is that?
3: When would you do level 1 and 2 and hazmat?

Here is the flow chart:

After reading all the information that they provide it seems as if becoming a fire fighter is extremely expensive and difficult. Is this true?
I have read many times that your application file is reviewed thoroughly, your polygraphed, references checked and everything. I don't want to spend a bunch of money and then to be told that I am denied and have to wait a year to re apply or that I can't re apply at all.

Any advice would be helpful!
