So I'm wondering if anyone on here knows how long you have to be tobacco/nicotine free in order for a nicotine test for a prospective job to be negative. I'm guessing they will probably do a cheek swab.

I did some looking around and saw something like 3 or 4 days. Check this out.

Some agencies will have you sign a statement that you will be tobacco free during your career.
Some candidates have turned to chew and think that will be accepted.

Yeah that's what I signed during CPAT a few weeks ago. My question is at what point will the tobacco not show up during a cheek swab test which is probably what they will administer. Do they do this during the medical check??? If I haven't used tobacco for a month or so before hand I should be ok right?

Hair sample used to be used? But now so many tests can be conducted with a swab.

Not sure how long it takes for it to get out of your system. But more and more departments are requiring it's members to be tobacco free for their careers, mine included. If you want to get hired, I'd try to simply quit entirely and not worry about it. Tobacco use was a question that came up in my interviews, my medical and my background. It was asked about frequently.

From my understanding, If you stop using tobacco a month in advance, the test will definitely come back negative. I've done a good amount of research on this and the longest I've seen that it will stay in your system is 4 days.

I spoke with a good friend who RN's at an industrial clinic (they do alot of drug testing) and her experience is that cheek swab aka saliva test is usually done and is reliable 4 to 6 hours. Can be reliable up to 3 to 7 days for infrequent use and chonic use is 7 to 10 days. The test can also be done with urine. Test results are immediate in most cases. The test is similiar to a litmus test as it uses paper strips and color coding. A tobacco test is pretty cheap and can be administered by anyone.
She said that drinking something acidic right before the test can screw the results so make sure if your administring the test to not allow anything in the mouth for 10 minutes before the test and if it's urine, don't whiz in a half full OJ bottle.
Hair folicle can be used and is good for up to 6 months depending on what they are testing for. She has never administered hair for tobacco use.
Hope this helps... Be safe, R2

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I'm not a frequent user and haven't been for over 3 years. I just have a chew or dip once or so a monh but haven't, nor do I plan to anymore since I've gotten this far into the process. Thanks for the help!!!

As long as you're comfortable checking the "No" box when asked:
Do you smoke?
Do you use tobacco products known as chew/dip/snuff, etc?
Partly comes down to the integrity issue of it.
Say they do test and a tobacco product is detected. You checked "No" but your tests say "Yes"......
Goodbye job.
