I have been a volunteer for a few years and know all about the rules of a probie, i.e. be seen and not heard type of thing. What I was wondering is what is ok to have on turnout gear without looking like the person who is trying to look like a salty vet. I am planning on using a carabiner to hold the lapel mike on my turnout coat and have a tool pouch that fits in my bunker pants so that I can easily access my lineman pliers, box cutter, screw driver and extra flashlight. Do you think this is too much. The reason for some of these things is because throughout the academy I have seen a few things that seem to work really well on some of the instructors gear and am planning on using it when I get to the floor.

I would say get a good 90* light for the outside of your coat, wire cutters in BOTH front pockets, and be done with it. Anything that would not be used for safety and survival is not something you HAVE to have on you. If you need tools or a scredriver, chances are you have time to get them from the truck. Otherwise it is just extra weight to carry around.

All I carry in my gear is the above items, anm extra hood and webbing tied for rescue. All are S&S related and do not weigh me down.

I carry a 50ft rope with beener (regulated in my state) a couple of door chocks a handfull of golf ts and cutters. I got rid of the rest of the stuff it made my gear to heavy and I never used it. all of those things I can get off the truck anyways but if I get tangled up I want the cutters now. Hope this helped:>)

I used to carry alot of things over the years I have trimed down do to the weight and I never used them. First things first always carry a tool an ax a haligon or the combo, any thing besides that you can get off the truck if needed. That being said, In my pants I carry 50 ft of life safety rope with caribener, 2nd pocket pair of cutters if I get cought up I want them now, they will save your life someday, then in my coat a few door chocks and a handfull of golf t's. I usually carry a 3 ft piece of rope looped w/ barrel knots for either a hose sling or extra tool strap possibilitys are endless for it. I think I carry enough without being weighted down.

Excuse my ignorance, but what do you use the golf tees for? It sounds interesting.....

I've always carried a nice little knife with a decent serrated blade on it.

Useful for cutting through seat belts if need be, and anything else.

Always nice to cut through a car's battery cables if you dont have time to take the tools out and do it properly.
