I've been told it's the same in Mass. Could be part of the CDL process in all states. Does not seem to be enforced but an accident and a good lawyer could make the dept. liable.

As a mechanic, I have to have a class A CDL, with tanker and HazMat endorsements. Otherwise, I can't drive them.

As for the FF's that drive the rigs, they do not have to have any state or city citations, saying they are qualified to drive a rig. It is done in house, through the FD.

I'm now curious as to what the state laws are here, concerning this thread.

So, you can operate an emergency vehicle during a stressful adenaline filled response with no CDL, but you can't drive to a parade?
We actually asked this question during our EVOC training last fall, and we were informed that in PA you are permitted to drive a fire truck to parades, with the same credentials that are required during an emergency response.
They consider it driver training.

I don't want to rehash the argument here, but we are having an interesting discussion about this over here.

Seems like here in Nebraska, all drivers of Emergency vehicles are exempt from the CDL license.

Well the folks in Albany tried and failed AGAIN. Now the new law reads that you don't need the CDL to drive to the emergency scene, or to return from it. BUT you still need one for training, parades, repair shuttle. Back to the drawing board.....

Where does one look for info regarding the issue of CDL fire departments? I live in MN and tried looking it up at the DMV but did not find much on it.

You need a Class D License to operate a fire truck.

>Fire trucks and emergency fire equipment, whether or not in excess of 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, if driver is an on-duty firefighter or a tiller operator employed by a fire department to drive the rear portion of a mid-mount aerial ladder truck.
