When is peer review for the Fire Prevention and Safety Grants? And when do you believe they will start the award process?

Done some like that with regional benefits, since county fire marshal's and associations can apply it's still a single applicant just a larger area affected by the project.

Got a call from FEMA today saying that they emailed me the 10qs in June and I did not respond. I explained to her that I never received their email. She was a very nice lady and resent them to me while we were on the phone. I got them answered and sent back. Well actually it was 8 Qs. Now I am getting excited waiting for them to start announcing. I asked if she knew when they would start but she didn't.

Handling FSC first since it's 2-3 year projects, they want to get people moving on awards so they can go to bid since most areas that's a 60 day process by law at minimum.

Looks like someone made a boo-boo on the awards site and released the full award list this morning. It has been corrected, (now only showing $16M worth of awards) so those of you that showed up this morning aren't official awardees if you don't have your Award Notification in the portal. Every list I saw this morning that actually listed names was the

When you click on state breakdown, there it shows 216 and 34,014K awarded. Still does right now.

My DJ stated the need for more detail in the evaluation of the grant and the long term affects. My evaluation consisted of a detailed three stage evaluation program. Very in depth! Also had a great ending with long term effects and how the program will maintain itself in the future. Very odd!!!!

I have tried to get a fire extinguisher prop for the last two years and both times fell short. The first time it was part of a CO detector program and was pulled out, with the detector program awarded. The second time I reworked it as a stand alone project.....no luck. I know props seem to be an uphill battle, but I think I am going to try again. My thought was to add some 2.5 lb ABC extinguishers for residents into the program to give to residents who are trained. Has anyone ever received funding for fire extinguishers. I have aleady been successful with smoke detectors, CO detectors, and several other fire prevention items. Was just curious because I believe home fire extinguishers can be just as beneficial in trained hands.

Or should I just give my department an nice new name.....ya know like some big organization and just ask for a million dollars!! On a side note I am getting frustrated with this program and its perceived objectives. Part of me thinks it is easier for them to give a million to one organization than 10 grand to 100.....much less administrative work.

WTFD : We have tried three times for a fire extinguisher training system along with us providing extinguishers to the elderly and the boating population as a targeted population. We have had several marine fires with loss of fishing vessels and several cases where elderly folks had stove fires that might have seen less damage if they had extinguishers and been trained to use them.
We have been DJ'd 3 times
Our total request was under 20k and the reasoning given was the long term measurability of success & positive outcomes of the program.
I don't know how to crack this grant to make it a winner.

BC79er_OLDDELETE

They're very specific about the extinguisher projects on how they have to be written and who for. Don't hit it and it's out, and it's very easy to stray without realizing it.

wtfd2940
09-19-2009, 08:57 PM
I would guess that nobody knows where that target is exactly. I know it is a little tricky and I have always tried to thread that needle, but apparently with no success. You have to keep it to adult high risk populations so how far could you stray? Should those with disabilities be trained in extinguisher use? Do I hit the adult high school population or is it too close for comfort? If they are looking for a specific group they should tell you, and if you have a need in that group and have a large population in that group then go for it.

BC79er_OLDDELETE
09-19-2009, 10:23 PM

Anybody have any tips for an inspection program? Going after mobile data collection device as well as software to use with our existing program. Would it help or hurt to mention that we have not had any incidents involving commercial structures in over 5 years since our current program has been in place? The problem with the current program is it is highly time consuming and hard to get people to volunteer to help with it. That coupled with the hard copies of the pre-plans performed during the inspection are in the station in a drawer and not on the rigs. Any input from someone with experience in this program area would be appreciated.

WTFD : We have tried three times for a fire extinguisher training system along with us providing extinguishers to the elderly and the boating population as a targeted population.

That's not encouraging. I did not submit a grant app for last year's program, but the year before I though I had a winner to continue a program that we have been funding to post "Meeting Place" signs at our Condo complexes for each building. That way when we get there the occupants have not scattered into the parking lot intermingled with the crowd. Funds were for the signs, and a small budget for the Saturday program orientation that we put on for the comples. It was only $10K for three complexes.

For this year I was going to put in for an extinguisher program to run education at the Assisted Living and Nursing Homes for the staff.

I'll have to check the past awards to see if an extinguisher program has ever been awarded.

Plenty have been funded for extinguisher trainers. They just won't fund handing out extinguishers since they're required in all high occupancy residencies, over the road trucks, and on marine vessels by the Coast Guard. Low income residents maybe, but in most cases won't do it. Liability of providing something fight fire versus just educating how if they choose to purchase their own is another potential issue there.
