How many of you are/were in San Diego taking the recruit exam?
Without getting specific about whats on the test, because I think they are still testing this afternoon; How do you think you did if you already took it?
Good luck to all!

I felt like I did alright. I know I missed a couple on the study material portion of the test because I straight up didn't remember the answer, other than that I felt pretty strong. You?

Same for me. Feel pretty confident overall but there were a couple on the study section I had to take a guess at...

I have no idea how I feel about that test? I was surprised that they didn't ask more questions about the study material, but that's a good thing that they didn't. Does anyone out there have any idea how many people tested, and how many they are looking to hire off this test? Good luck to everyone!

Same here. Missed two on the study material portion and possibly two on the initial portion of the exam. I'm sure the top recruits will have a score of 100% so I'm a little disappointed for second guessing myself, but so it goes. Either way, I'm glad I was able to take advantage of the opportunity and also put my test taking skills up against what looks like a solid bunch of recruits.
Good luck to all you guys and gals!

Congrats! I got the notice yesterday. I am in category 1 as well. Looks like its you, me, and 100 others in this group.
I also called and got my actual test score. I got a 95.
Good luck!
The letter only states what category you are in, how many are in your category, how many categories are above you, and how long the eligibility list is for.
I'll keep everyone posted if I hear anything about interviews, hiring, etc. Please do the same!

Unless things have changed since previous SD tests, your letter means there are 100 others in that group on that test day and time. That doesn't include category 1 for the other testing days/times.

My exam say T2848-01 , i took the test the first day and time. Anyone else have something different?
Just wondering--does City of SD still require graduation from the local fire school? I'm an eastcoaster now, but worked over on that side of the country for a while, and was never able to test for them because of that. Also, do they require medic now?
Thanks...

...according to personnel, Category 1 is based on all tests collectively.
I believe last year there were only 43 in category 1 and all those hired were from that group of 43.

Just got a letter from SD. My interview is scheduled for June 26th. It says they are interviewing for the 72nd academy scheduled to start August 31st of this year. (THAT'S FAST).
Keep your eyes on your mailboxes. Good luck to everyone!
Note: I was cat 1. It doesn't say how many they are interviewing but when you call the number to confirm your appointment it says something like they are holding interviews from 6/16 - 7/6... that could mean a lot of interviews.

blindedbysmoke
06-08-2009, 10:46 PM
I was doing some calculating and if you look at the fact that they are only conducting interviews the 16th through the 1st, thats only 12 days of interviews. Figuring at 30 min blocks or so per interview and given a lunch break, thats around 100 interviews...or CAT 1.
Now thats only a guess-timate..so dont hold me to it. sounds good though.
egrus21
06-10-2009, 04:09 PM
My guess would be if they are looking to fill an academy they would want to interview more than 100 people. (I HOPE you are right but I don't think I'm that lucky.)
Anyone from cat2 get an interview?

I've been a lurker for awhile, first time post. I received my selection letter today, containing all the information and background steps necessary to move on in the process and finalize approval for the 72nd. From what I understand selection letters were sent out a few days ago, which will be followed by non-selection letters in the coming days.
I live in San Diego and know several people who have also received their selection letters nearby, so if you live farther it may be a few more days. If you don't receive anything within the next 3-4 days odds are you did not pass the oral and will receive a non-selection letter in the next few weeks.
Congrats to all that made it, I will see you in the 72nd hopefully. Good luck to all those that didn't, every test is an experience to help in future hiring.

Also thought I would add, there is a simple way to know if you were selected or not without even opening the mail you receive. You will either get:
A. A thick gold packet via registered mail, meaning you have to sign for it in person.
B. A letter much like you received for the oral interview, essentially a "Dear John" letter thanking you for interviewing, but respectfully declining the offer of employment. This you do not have to sign for and it will arrive as standard mail.
Again, good luck to everyone.

From what I heard this will be a roughly 40 person academy, 35 or so from the fire selection, and 5 from the San Diego Miramar College Open Enrolle program.
If you were non-selected I would look into this, the only requirements are that you be an E.M.T. and tested Category 1. The downside is that you must pay your own way through the academy ($3000+), and there is no guarantee of hire upon finishing. The 5 names are randomly drawn. People who finish this way usually get hired post-academy.

Did anyone else on this board apply for the open enrollee position? We find out on Friday if we are selected. I understand there are about 25 people in the lottery for 5 slots.
Let us know if you get a call!
Also, if anyone that was selected for hire wouldn't mind I know a lot of us from cat 1 would be interested in hearing about your background. (Med, FF, etc.)

The backround part was what I am curious with, i didn't put in for the 5 slots. I heard from somwhere that the last few SDFR academies were mostly made up of medics, not sure how true this is, but if you're in the fire service now, then you know how the rumor mill works. If it is true though... having your medic is worth it.

Hey popo,
i know you directed the question at egrus but since i had asked a similar question the the HR rep, i figured i'd take a shot at answering. She told me that a 2nd academy is still up in the air, simply because of budget. She also said that SDFD did take a pretty big hit with the retirees this year which is why a 2nd academy is still a possiblity just not a certainty. Just recently thier budget was going to only allow for one academy per fiscal year, but as stated before, they took a big hit, so who knows what the plan is for a second one. Although, the list still has 60 or so candidates, which would still make the list eligible for the next fiscal year. She also said that if another academy was to come off of this list, there would be a 2nd interview. So..my guess is that there is no list or ranking of any kind, they simply pulled the first 35..then the 5 from random for this academy in August and next time, i would assume, they would do the same. Hopefully this helps

Hey guys and gals! Quick question, anyone know when they will be testing again.
JohnnyFF
10-06-2009, 10:49 PM
The City of San Diego just instituted a city wide hiring freeze to include Police and Fire.
The current 72nd academy will continue as scheduled but there is no word on a 2nd academey or if they will do another test.
egrus21
10-14-2009, 04:20 PM
Hi all! Sorry, I haven't checked the forums for a while.
I spoke to HR and I was told that the list for the next academy is the remainder of the category 1 list (approx 60 people). I was told there will be a second interview.
An interview with 59 other participants for 35 slots… I’ll take it! :)
Also, as Johnny mentions SD is on a hiring freeze. I understand that they haven’t decided if the hiring freeze is only for additional (net new) personnel or if it includes all hiring. Remember, the personnel hired for these academies are not net new, they are replacements for retiring firefighters.
That decision will decide if they do another academy early next year or not.
Our 60 person category 1 list is good for 2 years so even if they wait until summer to do an academy in the next fiscal year we will be in good shape. (SD fiscal year starts in April.)
All we can do now is wait and hope the hiring freeze doesn’t affect us.
