Has anyone ever heard of a dept. having their own mechanic that is not a trained fireman? I work for the city garage and I am an ASE master and EVT master fire apparatus technician. I am trained to work on all fire equiptment, but I also have to work on all the city's equiptment too. I would like to work for a fire dept and work solely on fire equiptment. My credentials are excellent, but I am not a fireman. Any input would be greatly appriciated.

I Know a lot of departments have there own mechanics for fire equipment. I work for Durham and we have our own mechanics. Actually it is a division of fleet, but they have their own garage located at our training grounds and they only work on fire trucks.

Lots of departments in CA have dedicated Fire Mechanics. 40 hour work week, good benefits, good pay, etc.

Thank you for all your input. I'll look locally to see if any FD needs a mechanic, and then go further. I'm currently employed and work at really a great place. We have all the latest and greatest, but I feel rushed to finish my jobs. There is always another lawn mower, tractor, or squad car to repair. I really would like to devote my time to what I was trained for.

The fire apparatus mechanics in my area are in fact civilians and not firefighters. Do a google search on fire mechanics jobs. See what comes up.

If you are certified, you stand a better chance getting a job than the guy who isn't.

Not sure of your locations, but check the various cities/counties web sites for jobs can let you know who is and isn't hiring. Again google is your friend.

You having to work on other city equiment is common unless you have a lot of fire equipment to maintain.
