In my department, before members can be assigned to a company they must complete 9 weeks of recruit training including 24 hrs. Haz-Mat FRO, 24 hrs. CPR/Emregency Medical First Rsponder, 32 hrs. Technical Rescue, and 280 hrs. Basic Firefighting to the FF I/II level. They are then on probation for a period of 1 year from date of hire.

We have a probation period for our members. Before they can ride on anything they have to have a combined 20hrs of training. They cannot enter into any structure until they have been on for 60 days. At present I am going to push for more training hours, something. Any suggestions?

I'm actualy not sure what the precise number of hours for the ciriculum in my area is, but i know its pretty lacking. The New Jersey ciriculum is also not very in depth.

Our department is moving to a proficiency test based on the FF1 standard. We find that training time alone doesn't guarantee that the recruit can actually perform the tasks expected of him/her. Some individuals are able to "get" the material much quicker than others, so we think we need to look at something other than just training hours. We're also finding that some of our trainers probably shouldn't be training ...... their students can't perform the tasks when they are done training! The recruits will be required to pass the FF1 before they can ride and if they can't pass they get to go back and train again.

In our department a new recruit is assigned a black helmet. This signifies he is a probie and not allowed to participate in an actual incident. He may respond on one of the support vehicles, not on a first due piece and act as an observer only. After 15 hours of in-house training he/she will be issued a standard red helmet. This is after they understand our SOP's and get training in the basics. Within the first year they are required to start the basic level of Firefighter 1001 (IFSTA). Beyond that we rank of f/f's with different level of SCBA use, which will dictate which piece they can ride. Level 1 - trained to use/maintain their SCBA, (exterior only). Level 2,3 - interior user, difference based on leadership ability. First due equipment staffed by 2's & 3's, 1's used in support positions only. Our goal is to train every member at least to level 1 SCBA, considering the air mask a piece of protective clothing instead of thinking of it as specialized equipment.

Be safe,

Mike
