Behold, I have looked high and low; I have checked various websites, as well as books. I am desperate to find a list of what is considered to be a full 'cache' of equipment for an USAR team. Not just rescue equipment, we're talking communications gear, clothing, expendable supplies, etc... You name it. If anyone has any ideas here, the information would be appreciated.
Thanking everyone in advance.....

You might want to try the USFA's website. They have a book available on Rescue teams that lists the equipt you will need for various teams you want to set up. The book is called; Technical Rescue Program, Development Manual. The USFA will send it to you free of cost, they're your tax dollars, put them to use! You'll find them at, www.usfa.fema.gov. (http://www.usfa.fema.gov.)

Thank you for all of your responses. I appreciate the help. FEMA's site isn't very well organized, they frequently reference other material that they don't have links to or, that you can't find on their site.

Once again, thank you all for the help.

BURNSEMS--

I DO NOT plan on buying all of this equipment.

A. I was curious as to what was considered to be a full 'cache' of equipment for a USAR team when it deploys.

B. As I have reviewed the information, I have noticed trends. Different types of tools that fall into categories. If you are organizing a High Angle rescue team, look at the Rigging/Lifting sections-- it will give you a god place to start if you are looking for equipment, what to purchase, what not to.

C. Knowledge is power. You can never stop learning about a subject.

I do appreciate your opinion, I hope that you don't view this posting as an attack, because it is not.
I have gained insight from posts that you have made in the past, and will continue to learn from posts that you WILL make.

Thank You.

Marc

Yeah, but I bet when you walk in to your local Motorola dealer and tell him you want *76* UHF handhelds, he can cut you a pretty good per unit price! (Maybe your local trombone dealer too!)

I have just been asked by our City Manager to put together info about having a search dog.

I cannot find any suppliers of dogs trained for search work. We want to be able to buy one that can hit the ground and start working right away.

Can anyone point me to a vendor?

I am no search dog expert. However I do work with dogs and their trainers fairly often.

From what I understand search dogs have a very close bond with the trainer and will work with that trainer exclusively. So as far as just getting a search dog I think you need to do a little more research. This isn't an overnight type deal. You need a trainer with a lot of time to dedicate to taking care of and coaching this dog. Also there are a few types of dogs out there, ones that look for live victims, ones that look for dead bodies, ones that are used for tracking, than of course you get into LE dogs for drugs and explosives, and a couple others I've left out. I think you need to look at a lot more than just finding a dog. Not to be rude, but it comes off as if you guys don't have any idea of what you are getting into.

Unless I'm missing something, the cache list doesn't do me any good. I'm already familiar with that list, we do have a recognized USAR team, but the list doesn't give me vendors.

I, too, have done a lot of work with dogs. I have a Schutzhund III Rottweiler that is also profecient at not only tracking but air scenting as well. His age and an injury preclude him as being a canidate for this endeavor.

I have always started with a green dog and done the training to get them where I want then to be. Depending on the goal, that may be a few months to over a year.

As you probably know, LE dogs are often sold with much if not all of the training all ready in place whether it be for bite work, narcotics, or explosives. Usually after a few weeks with a new handler the dog is ready to go with it's new team.

Part of the dilemma I face is that the City Manager wants a dog that can do SAR and eventually cadaver. These two things are not usually taught to the same dog. The chiefs that the City Manager has tasked with determining if this can be done do not want FD to be involved with a K-9 at all. Our PD has an extensive K-9 unit, so the chiefs want to leave all of the dogs with them.

I think it would be great for FD to have their own SAR dog, but the chiefs don't want it. The only way I can pull this off is if I can have a dog that can start work quickly and at a cost the chiefs can handle.
