Hi gang. Is there anyone out there that has developed or is developing a program to introduce technical rescue to fire / rescue / EMS personnel? I have been contacted by a fellow instructor who would like me to assist him with his firefighter class and do an approx. 1 1/2 hour class to explain technical rescue. I have some ideas, but would like some imput from anyone who has done this type of class or has a program developed. thanks for your assistance.

I have been giving a "Technical Rescue" awareness class as part of our Fire Academy for several years. My main presentation is:
Reference "special Rescue" chapter in the new (4th edition) of IFSTA Essentials of Firefighting and quickly cover the main topics. (I''m still not sure how they can print a whole page on 'escelator rescue')
I have also gone through past "American Heat" video's and found good examples of special rescues. by showing brief video clips, I can show the need to learn special rescue techniques as each of these rescues could happen in our response area. It doesn't take long to spark some interest in this fascinating area. Good Luck.

My only recommendation would be to consult NFPA 1670, Standard on Operations and Training for Technical Rescue Incidents, and advise your class of the requirements set forth therein. I believe exposing potential tech rescue team members to 1670 early on will allow them to focus on training opportunities that will allow them to advance their standing in a measurable way.

Hey you Walrus, did you fall and hit your haed last night or what? Did you forget that we have a tech. rescue team in the county or what? I know you working at FRC and all you usually don't get to dispatch the correct assignments, but we do exist in the shadows of your not so real world of the "keyboard/Dispatcher interface"... Give me a call you dork, and I'll help you put something together...

If you are limited to an hour and a half lecture I would concentrate on the basics of an awareness class such as identification, initial actions (limit further loss, resources needed, etc.)
I have taken only a couple hundred hours total of training in most technical rescue disciplines and with that experience I have only begun to break the surface. Stick to making sure people realivze it is a technical rescue before the incident has progressed to far or further loss of life occurs.
