US Navy fieman lost...

I was just reading a news article that a US Navy fireman apprentice fell overboard of the USS Kitty Hawk on Wed. He has been declared dead. Please pray for the repose of his soul

My deepest sympathy to the family of the Sailor who was lost. For the record, a Navy Fireman works in the engine room. They don't have firefighters per say on the ships. All personnel are trained in firefighting and Damage Control teams do crash/rescue.

Fireman apprentice is a rate.it would be pay grade E-2.This sailor is not really "rated"yet which means he has many of the technical skills to become a boiler tech or any of the other Navy engineer rates.To become a Boiler Tech or BT you need to pass your test on what the rate involves and be signed off in all areas that will advance you.From there you become a BT-3 up to BTMC.(BTMC is Boiler Tech Master Chief or E-9)
Damage controlmen (another rate for firemen)is the on board fire and damage team.Their job is to stop water getting on board and to stop fires.Also if ship is going down it is their job to destroy classified hardware.Another rate in the Navy that is a brother to the DC rate is Hull Tech.It is DC with more emphasis put on repair.
But like you said God bless the sailor that was lost at sea.

We are responsably for the handing of aircraft aboard carriers and amphibious. I am in the Crash and Salvage division, which provides serpression in the event of mishap. I ship out the 23 fo nov. to....the Kitty Hawk.

Hey Metro, keep you head on a swivel out on the flight deck!!!! There is a lot happening up there!! I was in from '91- '94. Commisioned the George Washington, and spent some time in the v-2 division.( cats & arresting gear) Be safe!!!!

Hey METROFD-17, good luck on the Kitty Hawk, I used to be attached to the KH battle group, Cowpens CG-63, former DC2, 95-99.

As far as everyone being trained in firefighting onboard ships that is correct to a point. Damage Controlman did 95% of the fighting onboard, not just crash/rescue. At sea fire parties, "flying squads" were made up of mostly DC men. Every ship does things diffrently, especially on carriers where the airdells did the crash/rescue and DC men did the below deck work. DC were just given more training, especially in the area of C.B.R.

My grandfather related a story from his training in WW II.He was first stationed aboard a Destroyer Escort and then a troop ship in the later half and end of the war.After training in SD they took a cruise up to San Fran on a training ship.Once at San Fran they were all taken to Treasure Island for DC training.He wound up getting his knees burned in a exercise where they had to put out burning oil(no propane in those days :D )He also said that while fighting these fires,in a simulated ship,they would raise the water level even with the tallest guys neck(sucked to be short)and then say"Your ship went down you are all dead!"It was used to get it through their heads that this was for real.I had the same experience at our Rerserve center DC chamber.But I had an easy time of it,I am 6'4 ;) .Stay safe and dry .
