What is a McLeod and what are the Engine Types?

What is a McLeod?
I've never heard that term until this year!

Second, what's the definition of the "Engine Types" i.e. Type I, II, III, 6, etc.

Engine typing refers to an engines' capability. In general, the smaller the number, the more power, size, capacity, etc.

Here's the minimum standards for each type:

Type 1 - 1000 GPM, min. 400 gallons of water, 1200' of 2 1/2", 400' of 1 1/2", 200' of 1", 1 20' ladder and min. 4 personnel.

Type 2 - 500 GPM, min. 400 gallons of water, 1000' of 2 1/2", 500' of 1 1/2", 300' of 1", 1 20' ladder and min. 3 personnel.

Type 3 - 120 GPM, min. 500 gallons of water, 1000' of 1 1/2", 800' of 1", min. 3 personnel.

Type 4 - 70 GPM, min. 750 gallons of water, 300' of 1 1/2", 300' of 1", min. 3 people.

Type 5 - 50 GPM, min. 500 gallons of water, 300' of 1 1/2", 300' of 1", min. 3 people.

Type 6 - 50 GPM, min. 200 gallons of water, 300' of 1 1/2", 300' of 1", min. 2 people.

Type 7 - 20 GPM, min. 125 gallons of water, 200' of 1 1/2", 200' of 1", min. 2 people.

An "X" after the type number means it's 4-wheel drive.

And here is a picture of a McLeod if I did the image insert thing right. Great tool for duff and leaf/needle litter plus it can dig a lot of line in a short time. Hope this helps. CLM

The McLeod must fill roughly the same role we use forestry rakes -- which have four big sharp teeth to cut small brush like briars and move heavy duff with. Follow-up with a extra-heavy whisk broom to clear out all the duff and litter.

ks__wildland is 100% on target. Great tool, works best in dirt and sand with light fuels, not well suited for heavy roots and digging stuff out. Killer combo when cutting line with Pulaskis in front. Check out NIFC or NWCG info. Don Zimmerman, Hanford Fire
