Key boxes may be required to be in compliance with if Fire Prevention Codes in your district if they have been adopted with the proper ordinances. We currently are using the Standard Fire Prevention Code which is adopted in its entirety. Therefore, we can enforce the requirement for lock boxes. This is often done during the preliminary plan review for the building being constructed. Other buildings & Businesses are requested to get lock boxes as they are inspected. After one year, we are planning on going back and requiring businesses to get lock boxes. ( If they are over 5,000 s.f. or A, E, I Occupancy.

My Township has passed an ordinance requiring lock boxes on all buildings that have any type of fire alarm system or sprinkler system. Since the ordiance was passed in Oct. 1996 725 lock boxes have been installed.
Now we are starting to get resident properties to install lock boxes as well.
