Need opinions... My local Wal-Mart wants to set up patio tables with the large umbrella's open. As the AHJ I considered the umbrella's to be an obstruction to the sprinkler system and would not allow it. Has anyone else had a simular proplem, if so how did you handle it???

As long as they are not storing anything underneath the umbrellas and the area around them is kept clear, I don't see a problem.
Wal-Mart has flammable and combustible all over the store, some of it stored on shelves and on racks...if there was a fire in merchandise stored on the shelving, wouldn't the shelving itself impede the operation of the sprinklers?

If there is a fire in the area, the umbrellas will eventually catch fire and burn, so the sprinklers will activate.

Patio umbrellas on display aren't defined as an obstruction in NFPA 13. Obstructions are fixed objects, such as lighting fixtures, ductwork, beams, girders etc. Storage, items on display, furnishings, etc, are not obstructing unless they are within 18 inches of the sprinkler. Think about all the other furnishings that also don't kick in additional sprinklers, such as signs, banners, or how about 5-6 ft. portable partitions in an office occupancy. They also could at first appear to obstruct the sprinkler pattern, but they are simply the contents of the building.
