Ok heres my situation. Next week i am going to be going to the local elementary school to do a presentation for the kindergarden and first grade classes. I will be doing this on my own (maybe have one partner). Last year i did it on my own. This year i want some new ideas or items to go over.
What I usually do is:
1) Go over not playing with fire (matches/stove)
2) safety plan (911, escape route, fire detectors)
3) stop drop and roll
4) dress up (suit up and on air and let the little ones touch me and talk to me)

This presentation usually last approx 20 min. Is there anything else I could do
Thanks for your input!

Have you thought about showing them what fire can do... Maybe like setting an old piece of furniture on fire, putting it ou with an extinguisher and letting them get an up close and personal view of it??

Another thing that you may try is giving them a tour of your apparatus... (if you're doing this in cooperation with your company)

thanks NEEN5029, Yes i am doing it with cooperation with my department. I am going to have a truck there (hopefully our new rig which is suppose to come in on Monday). I was thinking of letting them climb in to the cab (back seats). Does anybody else have any suggestions???

ONE OTHER THING U MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER IS TO GET A HEATING PAD TURN IT ON AND LET THEM FEEL IT TO GIVE THEM A IDEA OF WHAT THE DOOR IS GOING TO FEEL LIKE IF A FIRE. JUST A THOUGHT I'M DOINGAGIAN FOR THE SCHOOL'S HERE AND IT WORKS REALLY GREAT. LET ME KNOW IF IT WORKS FOR YOU.

You're doing pretty much the same program we do. We also take a smoke detector and sound it with the test button so the kid learn that the sound means GET OUT!!

Hi,

I'm not sure I would set anything on fire in front of K and 1st graders.

Before we received our Fire Safety House, we used a door and window to help the children simulate a fire drill. A frame and legs were framed around a window and a hollow core door.

The program went like this;
Taught them the importance of smoke detectors and how they sound and what they should do;
A mat was layed on the floor to simulate a bed;
The smoke detector was sounded;
each student was led through the fire drill;
feel the door;
a dark piece of cloth was used to simulate smoke on the other side of the door to cause them to go out the window;
Then they would go over to our plant or mail box for the Meeting Place.

The children enjoyed the simulation. At this point they would feel comfortable with the firefighter and they would dress out in full bunker gear and SCBA. Then the children got their hugs from the firefighter.

The other concepts that you mentioned would be worked into the program. However, it is important to continue with the programs every year and reinterate the concepts.

If you need any pictures of the door and window, give me your email address and I will send you the pictures.

Good luck and most importantly have fun teaching the children fire safety!
