Just a quick question, what does everyone require for head protection for water rescue? We have just purchased some low profile rescue-type helmets and will be using them for both water and ice rescue. We also require our shore crews to have their structural helmets on. Any other thoughts on this?

Structural gear of any type asks for trouble. There are enough Pro-Tec helmets in our water rescue truck and rescue truck to outfit more than enough personnel on the water and shore. Helmets such as traditional and modern style ones have large surface areas which can contribute to rescuer drownings or "pull under" type injuries. Fireboots fill up with water and weigh you down etc. Go with gear designed for water rescue, both for land and water based personnel.

Holes in the helmet to let water flow through is a must. Even a Hockey helmet is much better than a structral fire fighting helmet.

We require our people to wear rescue helmets on or off the water. Structural Helmets are to big and bulky. We use the same helmets for Rope, Water, Ice and confined space. Our helmets also have the light on top for night operations. Just thought I would share it with you. These helmets cost about $40.00 thru "NRS" or the "Rescue Source".

Our district requires all in-water personnel to utilize the ProTec helmet. All shore based personnel must wear the same. We have enough equipment for all personnel
