Remembering the 5 Buffalo, N.Y. Fireman killed on Dec 27th, 1983.

On Tuesday December 27th, 1983,at 20:23, 2nd Platoon Fire Dispatcher Bob Albert dispatched E-32,E-3,E-1,L-5,L-2,R-1 & B-43 (B/C Harvey Supple) to Box 191N.Division/Grosvenor for a reported 500 Gallon Propane Tank that had ruptured and was leaking inside a building. E32/L5 responded from the same Firehouse. E-32, E-1,L-5 & B-43 all arrived at the same time and began speaking with the bldg's occupants on what happened. It was at this point that the vapors from the propane tank had found a ignition source of a wood burning stove on the first floor of the four story bldg and caused the massive explosion.

ALL Members of L-5 were killed and eventually found buried, under massonary debris, under or around E-32. B/C Supple had a piece of wood lodged in his neck and blown against his truck. The Capt & Driver of E-1 were trapped inside their Engine when debris from the bldg landed on the cab of their truck. By them staying in the Engine saved their lives.

The members of Ladder 5 that were killed were:

FF. Michael Austin, 39, 15 year veteran
FF. Micahel Catanzaro 37, 13 year veteran
FF. Matthew Colpoys 47, 23 year veteran
FF. James Lickfeld 43, 18 year veteran
FF. Anthony Waszkielewicz, 37, 11 year veteran

Those of us that subscribe to WOF & either lived or still live in Buffalo make a effort to remember that tragic day.
