This is Cincinnati Fire District 1 Chief Steven Phillips reporting on a two alarm fatal fire which occurred in the Madisonville neighborhood of Cincinnati this morning. A neighbor smelled smoke and drove around the area until spotting heavy smoke coming from a single story frame house at 6616 Windward St. They reported the fire. Firefighters arrived moments later at 3:05 A.M. and at this point most of the structure was engulfed in flames. Neighbors had reported an elderly resident might be in the building and the first arriving companies made a heroic effort to enter the structure despite the advanced stage of the fire. The firefighters found and removed one elderly male victim from the building. Efforts to revive the unconcious victim began immediately but sadly proved to be unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The house and contents were destroyed by the fire. Forty firefighters took 1 hour to completely extinguish the blaze. The estimated loss is set at $95,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Because of severe fire damage the investigators have not determined if the home had working smoke detectors. No firefighters were injured.

Good afternoon. This is District 2 Fire Chief Gary Scott reporting on a 3-alarm fire which occurred this morning at 8:13am on January 1, 2002. Fire companies were dispatched to a report of an apartment on fire next to apartment 4995 Hawaiian Terrace. This address is located in the Mount Airy section of the city.
Upon arrival, fire personnel confirmed a working fire in a 2-story townhouse apartment complex. Heavy fire and smoke reported showing at the 2nd floor.
LOS ANGELES, CA:
MAJOR EMERGENCY STRUCTURE FIRE:
On Tuesday, January 01, 2002, at 0916 hours, nineteen companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, five Battalion Command Teams, five LAFD Rescue Ambulances, two Los Angeles County Fire Companies and other support units, under the direction of Assistant Chief Terry Manning, responded to a Major Emergency Structure Fire at 6531/6533 West Hollywood Boulevard, in the Hollywood area. First units on the scene reported a four-story, “vacant” (due to earthquake damage), center hallway apartment building with heavy fire showing from the third and fourth floors. As Firefighters entered the structure on the ground floor, they encountered fire on the first and second floors. Aggressively attacking the fire with handlines, the fire on the first and second floor was extinguished. Realizing that the integrity of the building had been previously compromised by the earthquake and now further compromised by the fire, all firefighters were ordered off of the roof and out of the structure and to take up a defensive position on the exterior of the building using heavy stream appliances. After the bulk of the fire was brought under control, firefighter used handlines for complete extinguishment in two hours and fourteen minutes. Two Firefighters were injured during firefighting operations, both were evaluated at local hospitals: one firefighter suffered head, neck and back injuries when a portion of the ceiling collapsed on the third floor, (treated and returned to duty); the other Firefighter suffered an injured ankle and was place off-duty. No other injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is listed as under investigation. Fire damage is estimated at $500,000, structure only.
Helping Our Own
"firefighter helping firefighter"
There are literally thousands of fire departments, nationwide, that are struggling to keep their doors open on a shoestring budget. Many don't have personal protective clothing, breathing apparatus, or even helmets to protect these courageous firefighters. Some are fighting structure fires in blue jeans and sweatshirts, and some of the poorer departments don't even have fire engines, they have to fight structure fires with a brush truck. That is unacceptable when larger departments are destroying good usable equipment, on a daily basis, which could be donated to these needy departments.
