LOS ANGELES, CA:

CIVILIAN FATALITY TRAFFIC COLLISION – LAFD INVOLVED:

On Monday, January 14, 2002 at 2229 Hours (10:29 PM PST), three Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, four LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one EMS District Captain and one Battalion Officer Command Team, all under the direction of 18th Battalion Commander Daryl Arbuthnott responded to a Civilian Fatality Traffic Collision with Fire Department involvement in the 5600 block of West 3rd Street in the Fairfax District. LAFD Paramedic Rescue 29, a Mid-Wilshire based 1999 Ford E-350 Type-3 modular ambulance (Shop #11580), was responding in emergency mode to the 900 block of South Crenshaw Boulevard for a 65 year-old male with difficulty breathing. Traveling separately from Engine 29, both units were responding from an “available radio” status. Pursuant of Department protocol, the ambulance was reportedly traveling eastbound on 3rd Street, a major thoroughfare, with its emergency lights and sirens activated, when it entered the signal-controlled intersection of La Brea Avenue, a key arterial roadway. According to witnesses, as the ambulance entered the intersection, it collided with a brownish-gold passenger coupe being driven northbound on La Brea in the number three lane. The collision between the ambulance and passenger car destroyed the latter vehicle, and gravely injured its 40+ year-old male driver. Despite intense life support efforts by Rescue 29’s crew and other LAFD responders, the man was declared deceased shortly after arrival at nearby Cedars-Sinai Hospital. A total of five vehicles were involved in the collision or its aftermath, bringing to six the total of patients. Two of the remaining five persons from other vehicles, including a 41 year-old female who was 7 months pregnant and a 32 year-old male, were taken to Cedars-Sinai for unspecified complaints. There were no physical injuries to Firefighters, but a Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) was instituted for those involved. It is important to note that there have been more than one-half million emergency responses by LAFD personnel since the last Department involved civilian fatality collision. That incident occurred on March 5, 2001, when an errant motorist in the North Hollywood area placed her compact pickup truck directly in the path of LAFD Truck 60 during an emergency response. Today’s incident remains under active investigation by Los Angeles Police officials and LAFD Administration.
The Chicago Firefighter's Best Friend

"The Chicago Firefighter’s Best Friend" will be the first book to document the role and tradition of Chicago firedogs through real life stories, history, and photography. It will appeal to firefighters, dog lovers, and Chicagoans. We hope to have over 200 pictures and at least 100 firedog narratives assessing the important role dogs have played and continue to play in Chicago firehouses. A percentage of the proceeds generated from book sales will be donated to a charitable organization which assists victims of fires.
*** FireNet Group Of The Day: ***

CFN, Columbia Fire Net, is a product of the Columbia, Missouri Fire Department. It was established to provide information via pagers to Chief Officers, Rescue and HazMat Team members and eventually to any interested CFD member. The pagers are provided at no cost to CFD members. With 4 pin options available, members could select any 2 additional types of pages. Obviously their individual pin, then a CFD all call pin and their choice of 2 more. About 2 dozen elected to receive CFN as one of their options. As of this writing there are 4 who are authorized to send out national pages. National paging will remain a very closely held authority. Since we are new, we have a rather steep learning curve. As Fire Chief, Wm. Markgraf is the nominal head of the system. The other 3 "national dispatchers" are employees of the CFD.

The telephone number for the Columbia Fire Department is 573 874 7391.
Home number for Darrin Arends is 573 687 3461.
E-Mail: dwa@gocolumbiamo.com
Personal Pager 499 8686

The CFD Web Page is: http://www.ci.columbia.mo.us which is the citywide page, then select the fire department.

Other dispatchers include Battalion Chief Ron McCord, Lieutenant Steve Sapp, and Engineer Dan McGavick. We sign by CFN/(and then our LAN identifications which is usually our initials.) For "snail mail" communications we may be reached at:

Columbia Fire Department,
201 Orr Street,
Columbia, Missouri 65201.
