The cause of the fire in the 7300 Blk. of Forty Archers Rd. Was caused from a 1990 Corvette that exploded in the garage. The owner of the residents told fire officials he saw flames coming from the car after he parked it in the garage. The 2 firefighters injured were treated and released from the hospital with minor injuries. Both firefighters were lucky that only the drywall fell on them and not the roof. The reason for the drywall to come down was from heavy water. The 2 firefighters will return from work next week.

<br />***BALTIMORE, MARYLAND FIRE HISTORY***

for January 16th:

1951: 10 Alarms - 6-6-10-42 & 4-4-10-414 - 1603hrs - Fire involved the Hawkins Point Ammunition Pier, Curtis Bay (South Baltimore) - The flames were fanned by gale winds & Acting BC-6 Wade F. Teves, Captain E-17, sounded the 2nd alarm @ 1617hrs - The fire was mushrooming underneath the land end of the pier & rapidly spreading toward the water end, 1,000' away - The 4th alarm was sounded @ 1628hrs, & the Fireboat Cataract was special called - Tied up to the long pier built in 1942 by the War Department @ a cost of $5,000,000, was the 70' tugboat "Catbird", 2 large barges, & a floating piledriver, which burned free of it's mooring ropes & drifted aimlessly about in the Patapsco River - Docked @ either end of the burning wharf were (2) $10,000,000 steamships, owned by the Maritime Administration, who forbade the moving of the vessels until permission was obtained from the Government in Washington; common sense dictating to move 1st & ask later - Amid the blaze creeping closer & closer, word was received granting the request - The S. S. America was towed away 1st because of the direction of the gale like wind from the northwest -When it became time to move the S. S. George Washington, a section of the blazing pier broke away & slid against the former troopship; a moment later there was a loud explosion & black oily smoke billowed up from the ship's fantail - Chief Engineer Michael H. Lotz, sounded the 6th alarm @ 1657hrs, and @ 1729hrs, ordered a 2nd alarm (8th alarm) from Box#10-414 & special called the Fireboat Torrent - In the next 2 hours the fire had complete control of the concrete surfaced, 40' wide pier from tip to tip - @ 1922hrs, Chief Engineer Lotz sounded the 4th alarm (10th alarm from Box#10-414 - BC-6, Harry A. Dolle, observed that the pier was slowly sinking & Chief Engineer Lotz ordered all firefighters to get back on land, not wanting to risk their lives since the pier was gone anyway - Meanwhile, all 4 fireboats were fighting the fire on the S. S. George Washington, the Torrent coming so close to the blazing vessel that it's pilot house was engulfed in flames - Mate John T. Hoffman was burned about the face as he vainly tried to put the fire out before the Fireboat Deluge turned 1 of her monitor pipes on the burning pilot house & extinguished the fire - By 2400hrs the big former troopship was a mass of charred & warped steel, but still burning brightly - It was 42 years old, built @ a cost of $3,000,000, & converted in 1942 @ a cost of $8,500,000 - Injured were Firefighters Roy Oswald, E-15, Attlee K. Lathan, E-26, Daniel Long, E-48, Nicholas Hovaker, T-23, William Gottschalk, E-32, & Herbert Stonesifer, E-47 - Firefighters remained on the scene for the next 4 days - The Box#414 Association had a busy night; in fact for the next several days they were busy around the clock - In the club quarters @ 530 N Calvert St, were (2) brand new 10 gallon coffee urns, & they brewed 233 gallons of coffee, made over 2,000 sandwiches, & dispensed 200 dozen of buns & doughnuts - The 414 members carried the foodstuffs to the scene of the fire, 10 miles distant, in 5 gallon portable thermos urns - Mr. Frank J. Bauer, President Of The Fire Board, personally thanked the Box#414 Club for the canteen service rendered for 118 continuous hours. (CHM1*TUH)

1986: 2 Alarms + Special Call 1 Truck(4) - Box#7521 - 0627hrs - 1618 N Hilton St - Walbrook (Northwest Of Downtown) - Fire involved a garden apartment building - No injuries reported. (TGA)

1989: 2 Alarms - Box#2127 - 1008hrs - 125 Colvin St - Lexington Terrace (Northeast Of Downtown) - Fire involved Apartment #3F in a 3 story brick low-rise project type apartment building. (TGA)

1996: 6 Alarms - Box#8267 - 1000 Block E 25th St - Northeast Of Downtown - Fire destroyed a 1 story brick 100'x100' building occupied by the J&J Auto Accessories Company, a racing & customizing shop - The building housed a tank of exotic racing fuel & chemical compounds used for customizing automobiles - This combination created suppression & hazardous materials problems - Cracks appeared in the 20' high walls causing firefighters to remain @ a distance - Occupants of (20) nearby rowhouses were evacuated because of flying embers - Damages were set @ $1.3 million to structure & contents which included a dozen cars & Formula 1 race cars - (1) firefighter was injured when he fell on the ice - T-16 was originally dispatched on the 2nd alarm, but became disabled - By the time the 6th alarm was sounded, the rig was back in service & responded. (TGA)
