*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***
CINCINNATI, OH:

CINCINNATI FIRE DEPARTMENT
MEDIA RELEASE
District 4

Media Contact:
District Fire Chief Jay Boeing 352-2344
District Chief Howard Reed 352-2311
Date: 01/18/02
Time: 03:39 a.m.

Good morning,

This is District Chief Howard Reed from the Cincinnati Fire Division, reporting on a two-alarm fire that occurred this morning in the Madisonville neighborhood of Cincinnati. We received a call from the Cincinnati Police at 0339 a.m. about a working fire at 5811 Sierra Street. Upon our arrival, firefighters found heavy fire and smoke coming from a single family 2-story with an attic frame structure. The structure was engulfed in flames on all 3 floors. This caused our tactics to change from an offense operation to a defense operation.

The first reports we received was that all occupants were out. Firefighters found 2 victims on the front lawn. Medical treatment was given by paramedics from Rescue 46 and the victims, an elderly female and a middle aged male were transported to University Hospital, where they received additional medical treatment. Their condition at this time is unknown.

There were no reports of any additional injuries to civilians or firefighters.

The house and contents were completely destroyed by the fire. Fifty firefighters took 2 hours to completely extinguish the blaze. The estimated loss to the structure and contents is set at $100.000.00.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Because of severe fire damage, the investigators have not determined if the home had working smoke detectors.

For any additional information, contact District Chief Jay Boeing at 352-2344.
LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Friday, January 18, 2002 at 1558 Hours (3:58 PM PST), eight Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, three LAFD Rescue Ambulances and two Chief Officer Command Teams, all under the direction of 13th Battalion Commander Michael Little, responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 7015 South San Pedro Street in the South Central area. The first Company to arrive on scene reported a single-family home with heavy fire showing to the rear. Firefighters using handlines tenaciously battled the blaze within what proved to be a two-story residence, confining the fire to the structure and extinguishing the flames in just 18 minutes. There were no injuries. Two adult women and a pair of teenage girls were displaced by the fire. They were referred to the American Red Cross for placement assistance. Loss from this fire is estimated at $45,000 ($35,000 structure & $10,000 contents). A malfunction involving a clothes dryer on the rear porch of the home has been identified as the cause of the blaze.

1975: 3 Alarms - Box#7524 - 0515hrs - 2905-2909 Walbrook Ave - Walbrook (Northwest Of Downtown) - Fire involved (3) 3 story brick rowhouses - Starting in the 1st floor middle room & going straight up through the roof of 2905, 7th Battalion Chief Joseph A. Spadaro was greeted with flames shooting out of all the front windows as the house turned into an inferno - He radioed for the 2nd alarm @ 0527hrs & DC Edward J. Callahan ordered the 3rd alarm @ 0539hrs - Firefighters tried in vain to reach the trapped occupants through the heavy smoke which poured from the rear of the dwelling - At one time firefighters had penetrated the 2nd floor, but the flames forced them to flee through the windows onto a back porch, where they were stranded until a ladder was raised & they climbed down - The fire spread to (2) adjoining dwellings & burned out the top floor of one - 8 bodies were recovered from the smoldering ruins of the bedrooms, the top most having collapsed through to the 2nd floor below - The 52 year old mother of 14 children was not @ home when the fire erupted, & only 2 people (visitors) out of 10 escaped the flames - A girl climbed out of the top bedroom window to the roof & made it next door, while a boy friend of 1 of the victims said he simply walked out of the back door when he spied the flames in the next room - The Fire Department Chaplain, Father G. Stanley Schwind, stood by saying a prayer as each body was carried out of the burned out dwelling. (CHM1*TUH)
· The ORIGINAL Chicago FireHISTORY: Ten years ago on Jan 17, 1992 at about 1600hrs Engine 14 was dispatched to 937 N. Racine (just 2 blocks from their quarters) where they had a fire. However, the house they had just passed at 824 N. Racine completely exploded. This was the start of a very unusual and trying situation with over 18 SIMULTANEOUS FIRES IN A HALF MILE AREA caused by a surge in the gas mains which caused pilot lights to become like blow torches. Battalion Chief Bob Hoff (now Chief of Training) was directing operations at 822 N. May when he was told of people trapped in a fire at 857 N. May, and he went there & rescued an elderly lady. Unfortunately four people died in the area. The CFD and in particular the Main Fire Alarm Office operated under extremely demanding conditions at this unusual incident. [CHGO-18]. 10:13p.m.
