CINCINNATI FIRE DEPARTMENT
MEDIA RELEASE
District 3

Media Contact:
District Fire Chief John Zompreo 352-2322
Date: 01/20/02
Time: 12:10 a.m.
Good morning,
This is District 3 Chief John Zompero of the Cincinnati Fire Department reporting on a 3-alarm structure fire that occurred Early Sunday morning (1/20/02) in a Northside business. Fire dispatch received several calls reporting a building on fire in the vicinity of Knowlton Street and Dane Ave.
Fire companies were dispatched at 12:10 AM and responded to find heavy fire showing through the roof of Willard Industries located at 1253 Knowlton Street.
Fire companies were unable to enter the building initially due to the heavy fire conditions coupled with the rapidly deteriorating structural integrity of the roof. Elevated hose streams using large volumes of water were deployed through openings in the failing roof to attempt to knock down the fire before it was able to spread to the remainder of the building. However, this proved to be a difficult task due in part to burning flammable gas cylinders located throughout the fire area. After approximately 2 ˝ hours the fire was brought under control and companies were able to enter the structure to extinguish the remainder of the blaze.
Willard Industries is a business that specializes in aluminum cast production. This same business suffered a large fire loss back in September to another building at the same location.
The initial reported loss caused by this fire is $300,000 to the building and contents, but this figure may be increased after further investigation. Approximately 70 Firefighters responded to the fire and there were no reported injuries. Fire investigators will not be able to complete their investigation until heavy equipment is brought in to remove sections of the
roof and walls.
For additional information contact District Chief John Zompero at 352-2322.

CINCINNATI FIRE DEPARTMENT
MEDIA RELEASE
District 3

Media Contact:
District Fire Chief John Zompreo 352-2322
District Fire Chief Anson Turley 352-2333
Date: 01/20/02
Time: 7:08 p.m.
Good evening,
This is District Chief John Zompero of the Cincinnati Fire Department with a brief update on the 3-alarm fire that occurred early Sunday morning at Willard Industries located at 1253 Knowlton Street in Northside.
A crane was brought to the scene of the fire at noon on Sunday to aid in removing debris and equipment so that fire crews could enter the building for final extinguishment and investigation.
Also, the fire loss was initially estimated at $300,000. After further investigation, the loss is set at $700,000 mainly due tot he value of the equipment damaged in the machine shop area.
Fire investigators will continue to sift through debris for the next several days in effort to determine the cause.
For additional information contact District Chief John Zompero @ 352-2322 or District Chief Anson Turley @ 352-2333.
