CINCINNATI FIRE DEPARTMENT
MEDIA RELEASE
District 3

Media Contact:
District Fire Chief Glen Coleman
District Fire Chief Howard Reed
Date: 01/03/01
Time: 04:30 a.m.
Good morning,
This is District Chief Howard Reed from District 1 of the Cincinnati Fire Department reporting on a one-alarm fire that occurred on January 3 at 4:30 am. Firefighters responded to a structure fire at 5100 Hawaiian Terrace. Upon our arrival 25 firefighters from three engine companies, two ladder companies and one rescue unit found heavy smoke coming from an 11-unit three-story brick structure.
Firefighters made an aggressive interior attack locating the fire origin in Apartment 3. The fire appeared to have started near an electric range, which was located in the kitchen and was brought under control and confined to the kitchen in less than 15 Minutes. There were approximately nine trapped tenants rescued by ground ladders form the upper floors, two of them were treated by Rescue 38. Due to the time of this incident, most of the occupies were asleep and their early warning smoke detector alerted them to the fire and helped with their rescue.
This fire and smoke caused approximately $15,000.00 loss to the contents and structure. There were no reports of any firefighters being injured.
The cause of this fire is undetermined at this time and is being investigated by Fire investigator Leroy Martin. For any additional information contact District Chief Glenn Coleman at 352-2333 or Fire Investigator Leroy Martin at 352-1683
