0100 A36 Southgate 4 pump fire, persons reported at 79 Brameley Rd, 3-sty shop & dwellings 8m x 10m, heavy fire 2nd flr using 3 hosereels.

0201 F28 Homerton 4 pump fire, persons reported at the Plumpton Lodge on Caldecott Way, 4-sty elderly care housing 30m x 10m, one ground floor apt fully involved, using 2 hosereels, 1 civilian rescued w/burns & smoke inhalation, 25 evacuated.

<br />01/23/2002 <br />Montréal,Canada. <br />**5th Alarm+** at 3457 St-Catherine E. @ Cuvillier ST. 3STY BRK COMM on 1st, MFD on 2nd and third. Heavy fire on 2nd, rapidly spreading to 3rd and thru the roof and to EXP 2 and 4. The fire is in front of the quarters of Firehouse13. S/C 10 units. 4FF injured. This is the 1st G/A for the F.D. of the new City of Montréal, born the 1st of January 2002. (07:40)

<br />***BALTIMORE, MARYLAND FIRE HISTORY***

for January 23rd:

1930: 5 Alarms - Box#7 - 0636hrs - Washington Blvd & The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad - Fire involved a 1 story woodframe & stucco building @ The General Electric Company -<br />There were 17 buildings in the huge complex & the one containing X-ray films was burning & throwing off deadly fumes - Captain John T. Hurley, E-1 (Rescue), donned a special mine mask, entered the building & extinguished the fire around the cabinets of films - Firefighters confined the fire to the 1 building, but when the roof fell in, Captain Marshall Teabo, Lieutenant John Eigenbroth, & Firefighters Ignatius Kelley, George Dickel, & Joseph Zentgraft, T-23, were injured. (TUH)

1930: 6 Alarms - Box#446 - 1615hrs - 219 N Sharp St - Downtown North - Fire involved the 4 story brick C. F. Meislahn Furniture Company & Factory - The building was billowing thick smoke after a gas boiler exploded in the basement & fire spread to the upper floors - 6 alarms were sounded in the next 14 minutes - 3,000' of seasoned cedar wood was compactly stored in the burning building & prevented the flames from shooting out - 2 workers trapped on the 4th floor placed a plank to an adjacent rooftop & crawled to safety - Captain Charles E. Hughes, E-4, Lieutenant John Tragesser, E-20, & Firefighters Edward Frey, E-1, William Schmidt, E-6, William Clark & Harry Blum, Salvage Corps-1, were injured - The nearby Century & Valencia Theaters were evacuated because of the terrible thick smoke in the vicinity - Later that evening @ 1740hrs, an SOS call was received by Municipal radio station WMH advising that the SS Orodell, lying off Fort Carroll (Outer Harbor) was on fire - The Fireboats Cataract & Deluge were dispatched & rescued all 18 of the crew from the blazing ship. 1954: 6 Alarms - Box#1428 - 0301hrs - 12-14 S High St - East Of Downtown - Fire involved a 4 story brick warehouse used by produce dealers for storage of wooden crates & baskets - Every window pane in the old double building had been broke out over time by vandals - Needeless to say, the whole building was a raging inferno with flames leaping out of every opening - Acting DC-2, Carroll F. Hand, BC-1, quickly sounded the 2nd, 3rd, & 4th alarms as the flames, spread by high winds in the 12 degree cold morning, rapidly consumed the building's contents & burst through the roof - Chief Engineer Michael H. Lotz sounded the 6th alarm @ 0404hrs, when the adjoining buildings caught fire & were gutted - Acting Lieutenant Michael Gleen, E-34, was injured by a falling beam. (CHM1*TUH)

1990: 2 Alarms + Special Call 2 Engines(38 & 21) & 1 Truck(7) - Box#848 - 2249hrs - 211-215 E 25th St - Charles Village (North Of Downtown) - Fire involved (3) 3 story brick vacant rowhouses with storefronts on the 1st floor. (TGA)

1992: 1 Alarm + Special Call 2 Airflexes(2 & 1), 5 Engines(5, 6, 24, 3, & 32), 2 Trucks(3 & 15), Fire Prevention, Rescue-1, 1 Aerial Tower(111), 1 Battalion Chief(2), 1 Medic(2), 1 Deputy Chief(2), Fire Investigation(5), & Car-414 (Box#414 Association Canteen) - Box#1836 - 0409hrs - O'Donnell & Conkling Sts - Highlandtown (Southeast Baltimore) - Fire involved cork insulation between the 3rd & 7th floors of the vacant National Brewery - No injuries were reported & companies were out for over 5 hours. 1992: 4 Alarms + Special Call 1 Air Cascade(1), 8 Medics (7, 5, 14, 12, 4, 6, 16, & 1), & Baltimore County Air Unit #368 (Lansdowne VFC) - Box#389 - 1252hrs - 1645 N Calhoun St - Sandtown (Northwest Of Downtown) - Fire involved a basement apartment & the 1 directly above it in the former Frederick Douglas High School - A female civilian was critically injured & taken to the University Of Maryland Shock/Trauma Center - The fire caused $125,000 in damages to the building. 23JAN1973 - Kano, Nigeria - Aviation Accident - Jordan Air crash kills 176 Moslem pilgrims.

23JAN1956 - Shenski Province, China - Earthquake - A catastrophic earthquake destroys entire towns and villages. The quake, which lasted only a few minutes but killed 830,000 people. Loess cliffs collapse on inhabited caves leaving the survivors homeless amongst the rubble.
