for January 4th:

1922: Chemical Co#1 organized - The Department became the first to install a Foamite Engine to protect its oil industry - Constructed in the Repair Shop, a used 1914 Mack AB chassis with 4 tanks of liquid foamite mounted thereon - It was organized as a Fire Company & placed in active service with E-41 in Highlandtown (East Baltimore) - The first Lieutenant was J. Howard Marshall from E-2 - Chemical Co#1, along with Chemical Co#2, was disbanded on 11/13/1981. (CHM2*TUH)

1952: 6 Alarms - Box#329 - 714-716 N Fremont Ave - Harlem Park (Northwest Of Downtown) - Fire involved a 3 story brick building. (CHM1)

1989: 2 Alarms - Box#856 - 0043hrs - 3316 Gilman Terrace - Hampden (North Of Downtown) - Fire involved the basement of a rowhouse - The fire, started by a malfunctioning oil furnace, caused heavy damage to the structure with losses put @ $65,000. (TGA)

<br />RESPONSE - HISTORY

04DEC1998 - Maysville, KY - FIRE/HAZMAT - A fire erupts in a fertilizer plant. Fearing a major explosion and emission of toxic chemicals, 2000 nearby residents are evacuated.

04JAN1987 - Chase, Maryland - RAIL - Amtrak/Conrail Crash. Conrail ENS-121 going northbound from Baltimore. Amtrak 94 northbound from Baltimore with 7 employees and 660 passengers. Amtrak traveling at 120 mph runs into back of Conrail. The impact of this collision leaves a death toll of 16 and 174 injured crew and passengers. (The AMTRAK engineer was later found to have been impaired while operating the train)

04JAN1977 - Chicago, Illinois - RAIL/MVA - Two train cars plunge from overhead tracks onto one of the Windy City's busiest intersections killing passengers and pedestrians. The death toll is eleven.

04JAN1966 - Feyzin, France - EXPLOSION/HAZMAT - An oil tank explodes at the local refinery. Most refinery accidents are caused by a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion). The risk zone for a BLEVE when a small container erupts can include a 10-15 mile radius around the site
